Which is better...? (Song vs. Sample edition)

Simple concept. Post the original and the song that sampled it and vote of which is better. I’ll start with one I forgot about it before it popped up on a Spotify radio yesterday…

I thought this would be an easy one considering how much I love Illmatic. But I think Reuben WIlson edges it because Memory Lane is probably my least favourite track off the album.

It’s my favourite for sure!

Wonder how much this’ll be influenced by which version you heard first also

Obviously my real answer is

(I have to say I do prefer the way the DC track builds but it never actually breaks out somehow, like someone just left the intro on the whole time.)

For sure, with a few exceptions. I did just vote Stevie over Coolio, despite knowing Coolio’s first.

It seems unlikely I’d go for a version I’ve never heard before today, original or not, unless it blows my mind.

Digging up this thread for a few songs that surprised me a little with their choice of samples.

Going to start with Kendrick Lamar

Sampling Sigur Ros

  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Sigur Ros
  • I think I’m quite happy to listen to both of these thanks

Next up, Brandy

Sampling her old favourites Iron Maiden (but interestingly choosing from what’s widely regarded as their worst album)

  • Brandy
  • Iron Maiden
  • I think I’m quite happy to listen to both of these thanks

And finally, Utah Saints

Sampling Discobot’s favourite dice companions Slayer

  • Utah Saints
  • Slayer
  • I think I’m quite happy to listen to both of these thanks

Hope there’s something in these of vague interest to someone out there.

That Brandy/Iron Maiden one has blown my mind

Nas edges it for me

as beautiful as the original is, it feels more like an interlude or something

Eno, but reminds me I want to check out Injury Reserve

The Clansman is one of the few IM songs I know due to it being on a Metal Hammer cover CD that I had.

I’ll vote accordingly once I’ve heard how Brandy used it.
