Will be surprised to see any record store or indie loving publication’s list without the Julie Byrne album - a quiet album full of big feelings. Was voted July’s album of the month over PJ Harvey and Blur. One for fans of Nick Drake, epic vistas full of mist, Elliott Smith’s gentlest songs with soaring bits, and modern sad-songers like Tomberlin, Sufjan Stevens and Mitski.
Guess my secondary Q is can you guess what DiS community will vote album of the year?
Sofia Kourtesis probably. Feels like it’s in that sweet spot of accessible for those who don’t listen to huge amounts of dance music and interesting enough for those that do.
My reference point here is Kelly Lee Owens (but better)
not that many albums/artists like this anymore are there? Or maybe I’m just disconnected from it. Think everyone who’s heard Rozi Plain - Prize has enjoyed it. Water From Your Eyes - Everyone’s Crushed could sneak onto a lot of lists too, reckon that has wide appeal
I suspect the James Holden album will (rightly) appear on lots of lists. Should also be popular with the DiS community, though not quite as much as Mandy, Indiana if the Neptune voting is anything to go by.
Amazed no one said Caroline Polachek yet, critics were falling all over themselves about it when it came out, reckon its goot a good shout to win the CUMULATIVE AOTY 2023
