Nice spread that. I’m not knocking Maker’s Mark… although Bulleit was on an insane offer in ASDA over Christmas. £20 I think. Superb value and now I’m annoyed I didn’t get a bottle.

You’d fucking hope so for £100! I got my brother in law a bottle of Blanton’s Special Reserve and I didn’t get anything nearly as nice in return annoyingly.

Ooooft, hello there! Can I get a sip of that please?

Yeah, at the £20 mark Bulleit is great value. It’s often available on Amazon for the same price. They often have Buffalo Trace for about £18 too which is about the best value bourbon going, for my money (whenever Woodford isn’t on offer, anyway)

As a rule, well above what I’d usually spend on an American whiskey but my tax return resulted in some surprisingly good news so I splashed out. I also bought a bottle of the latest Elijah Craig barrel proof - 69.4%(!!)

You ever had the Four Roses Small Batch? Can pick it up for £25 or so. Now Four Roses standard stuff I wouldn’t clear my drains out with but the Small Batch really is very, very good for the price.

Love Four Roses! Have to disagree with the standard stuff - it’s nothing special, but you can get it for 20 euros a litre in mainland Europe and as a mixer I find it much nicer than JD. But yeah, the small batch is great and the Single Barrel is even nicer. I have a bottle on the go atm, in fact.

I had the pleasure of meeting their master distiller at a tasting last year, and getting to try their limited-edition releases from 2015, 16 and 17. The 2015 was unreal. All goes for £250+ a bottle though (if you can find it!)

Yeah that was the mistake I made - it was dirt cheap in Spain one year and I bought a bottle. I really, really didn’t like it. But yeah was surprised at the leap in quality for the Small Batch, a delight. And the Single Barrel is lovely too (only had it once).

There’s a battle between Bushmills black Bush and Powers standard going on in my cupboard at the moment.

Powers is winning.

Generally prefer Irish to scotch but Dalmore do some wicked stuff

Realise it’s very early but given every shopping trip is planned with military precision these days, thought I’d get started:

What are people’s favourite value whiskeys that you can buy at any small supermarket / corner shop? Cheaper the better, Irish / Scottish / blend whatever - anything that stands out as better than what you pay for?

Probably a bit down to what you’re used to, but I’d go for the standard Jameson or Johnnie Walker Black label. Something like that.

Usually just go for the cheapest Jura for a steady cheap(ish) whisky

Another vote for Black Label. Very easy. Can often be found for £20 too.

Glenfairn’s usually only £20 in Tezzers.

Someone on Twitter mentioned Jameson’s and I’ve never actually tried it so might be worth a go.

I never usually buy it because it’s so ubiquitous and there’s always another option, but it really is pretty good. Tullamore dew too if you can get it.

Jameson’s goes with ginger ale better than any other drink i think.

Haig Club is pretty good for a general blended. Can’t be selling very well either as it’s always on offer at Tescos. Cool bottle as well.

As for American whiskey, you can usually pick up a big bottle of Jim Beam for about £15.

Tamnavulin, can get it in Tescos or Waitrose.

I’d take Johnnie Walker black over Jameson’s but it’s perfectly decent for the price.
