For clarification you’re saying none of you are on Facebook? Or that you didn’t see an effect on Facebook?

Regarding the obscure medical condition, this was the thing you picked out of nowhere to discuss? I guess to me this sounds like something that you would need to have knowledge of first from somewhere, whereas I was thinking more of you guys talking about…well I don’t know actually. It’s hard to know how to examine this via a proper rigorous scientific procedure. Maybe you need to find someone totally MOKER and off grid who you interact with but has no computer connection with you.

I’m not totally discounting what you’re saying about being consciously unaware of environmental influences guiding thought/conversation/search behaviour …but that’s a whole different paranoid nightmare

It is but considering the raw processing power needed to do what you’re talking about it seems the more likely of the two aspects?

I mean it’s definitely a big window into how well you can collate data but maybe not the one you think.

It’s also worth remembering that this is easy to do from your POV, as in when you search, but harder to use effectively from a Govt. POV because they aren’t really sure what they’re looking for and have a huge amount of data with no way to easily sift.

FB has lots of data but the UX shows how badly they can actually put this into practical use when you see the suggestions and such it throws up.

Nope, nothing. Typed in a several things I’ve been disussion recently with friends/girlfriend/work colleagues and nothing in suggestions or top results comes up from typing the first three or four letters for any of them. Maybe I’m so boring not even my iPhone wants to listen to me?

For full disclosure: iPhone 6 with google as default search engine. Siri is on.

But you don’t exist anywhere on social media right? I thought you were closet Moker?

That’s right. But that shouldn’t matter if this theory is correct.

Yes and no. I mean it strongly implies a net presence is part of how this works but then it could still mean BITT’s iPhone is using what he says to influence his own Social Media stuff?

friend 1 had a conversation with his gran who had just come back from the chiropodist with a foot problem diagnosed as this funny, long latin name

had a chat with friends 2 & 3 about this funny long name foot condition

opened safari on his phone a couple of hours later and typed in the first four letters (looking for something else) & the wiki page for the funny long name latin foot condition came up. Called friends 2 & 3 to repeat the search - they had the same result. Called me to do the search. I had I different result but the top result of my search was something I’d been having a conversation in the car with my wife about - a garden centre we’d been talking about going to but didn’t have time to in the end. My search was not an altogether unrealistic top result but even so… hmm

I don’t have facebook, friend 3 doesn’t have facebook

There is an option in the safari settings for ‘safari suggestions’ so it’s not necessarily google providing them.

Can you give us this funny long name of the foot condition? I mean Google knows a lot of ideas flat out based on four letters it will start to narrow things a lot.

well…let’s do it this way instead…

this is to everyone;

take out your iPhone, open safari, type the letters
p l a n
and tell me what the top suggestions/results are

That’s a fair point. The first thing shown in the search bar could be a Google result or something provided by Apple, depending on the nature of the query. There’s a description of how Safari Suggestions works here.

Yes of course it is.

I’d be offended if it didn’t.

You’re in Sweden though, correct? Is your Google in Swedish? Even if it isn’t then it will be affected by that regional thing. Lots of stuff starts ‘plan’ in London. What starts with plan where you are?

Certainly there are no foot conditions that come up.

(Obviously I have no iPhone and no reception here so I did this using Google Chrome at my desk.)

Where bounce you?

Because your results seem to differ wildly from mine:

planet of the apes for me. don’t remember talking about that

Aside from Planet Organic being my local suggestion, exactly the same.
