Who is worse

I was thinking yesterday about why does industrial pop type stuff seem to have such bad lyrics. I’m a fan of both NIN and Depeche Mode, but they both have a lot of total clunkers.

Who has worse lyrics?

  • NIN
  • Depeche Mode

The only lyrics from these two I’ve ever listened to are the ones from Hurt, I think. Which were fine.

Only one of those two wrote

“People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully”

This was one of the ones at the top of the league.

always thought it was ‘awkwardly’ not ‘awfully’

Then you’re an even shitter lyricist than Dave Gahan.

actually “awkwardly” is maybe better. sorry japes.

It’s NIN. It’s always NIN.
But it’s also part of what I love about Trent. He writes like an aspiring 6th form poet. It’s raw, it’s emotional, and it absolutely works.

I think my favourite naff NIN lyric job is probably No You Don’t. “Because everything else is dead on the other side” is peak Trent :grinning:

Smiling in their faces
While filling up the hole
So many dirty little places
In your filthy little worn out
Broken down see through soul

Baby’s got a problem
Tries so hard to hide
Got to keep it on the surface
Because everything else is dead on the other side

Teeth in the necks of everyone you know
You can keep on sucking until the blood won’t flow
When it starts to hurt, it only helps it grow
Taking all you need
(But not this time)
No, you don’t

And just for the record
Just so you know
I did not believe
That you could sink so low

You think that you can beat them
I know that you won’t
You think you have everything
But no, you don’t

No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t
No, you don’t

I went to this Depeche Mode themed bar in Estonia. Someone should open a NIN themed bar for pure ridiculousness.

Quite like some depeche mode lyrics. Reach out and touch faith is a great line.

Know-flow-grow rhyme schemes :joy:

Still think stuff like “bow down before the one you serve” is the cringiest though.

Ha! Chuckling to myself looking at the lyrics to HLAH written down. That really sets the tone for his future output, huh? Still think it’s partly because of rather than in spite of the naff lyrics that I love NIN so much.

There’s hardly any of them too!

I was at a johnny cash tribute night once (thankfully just the once) and some guy stood up and said that hurt could only possibly have been written by Cash.

Excellent! I would presume this was an ironic joke. Certainly that would be my hope…

If he was joking he maintained a straight face throughout

A friend of mine has angrily contacted eBay sellers and radio 1 in the past for crediting hurt to Johnny Cash
