I remember having quite a tetchy row with my brother when I had excitedly told him my hourly rate for temp work in the pub.

I feel like it was less to do with showing off and more genuine surprise that someone would pay that much for my time.

It wasn’t a cool thing to do.

In the city? That’s alright.

(sorry Pavlov’s dog)

That song has not dated well.

Also find salary discussions can be unproductive, putting a number on something maybe has a tendency to remove context (location, family & housing situation, commute etc) and say that if someone is earning x per year they must be comfortable/well off which isn’t necessarily the case

That’s the problem with inflation.

In the future we might be able to link songs to inflation.

I floated the idea of senior staff at work taking a paycut so the junior staff could get a payrise (it wasn’t possible for the junior staff just to be paid more, apparently, but probably was really). People said yes publically but no privately. Lots of “I’ve got kids, you haven’t” stuff by people (i mean, mates to a degree) who’d spend a couple of hundred quid a week on booze or in the bookies and in reality would’ve been a few pounds worse off a week and could have made it up in overtime easily.

Seemed a bit off to me, but at the same time i knew i was intentionally pushing their buttons, but the principle of someone earning 50% more than someone else for doing 50% less work really didn’t sit well with me, but lots of people were just “yeah, that’s the real world, pal”. My main beef was say no by all means, but be upfront about it, just say “look, lads, i’m not taking a paycut”.

Wife. Think I told my parents when I got a payrise so them too.

The TV knows approximately what I earn as at this point we kind of need to be on the same page when it comes to budgeting etc.

Otherwise, idk there aren’t that many contexts where I feel like it’s particularly useful information.

I think it depends on what angle you’re coming at the discussion from. If you’re doing it to be nosey at people’s personal situation, then yes it can probably be a bit destructive, but the purpose should more to be to increase collective bargining power and ensure that we all know our true value in the marketplace.

“Indie hit ‘22 grand job’ is currently titled ‘27 grand job’ after adjustment for inflation. Only the complete fall of capitalism will return the song to its pre-Libertines value.”

Yeah same here. And 0% commission on that £0ph as well.

thirty one thousand, two hundred and twenty nine pound thirty seven pee job, in the city it’s alright.

Pretty open with mates about it, weirdly. Especially university mates as we graduated at the same time and were all going for pretty much the same jobs in the same city. And it just sort of stayed that way. It can cause a bit of resentment I suppose, but it’s never done in a pissing contest sort of way. Helps to know what going rates are.

I feel like a number of different factors that could potentially skew this though no? Such as the discrepancy in rents, student loans, buildings/contents insurance, council tax and relationship status.

nobody really. the tv has a vague idea from our visa application but that’s going back a few years.

I’ve found that people who earn at least enough to not be struggling have significantly less interest in discussing their salary because it’s not something that’s on their mind constantly.

22 grand job by the rakes – I looked at this last summer, if that had gone up at inflation it would £30k but realistically lots of graduates would probably end up on… 22 grand

When you factor in the fact that housing costs in London have gone up by astronomical amounts since that song was written, it’s no wonder things are so bad

Oh agreed, and I certainly have a rough idea what sort of money most of my friends are on for this exact reason but I suppose knowing the exact figures isn’t really something that’s ever come up.

My wife and my parents, and the necessary management at work

Don’t even discuss work (mine or theirs) with mates, never mind earnings.
