Think my mum would maybe guess Slayer, my dad wouldn’t have a clue
That rap singer, I forget his name.
Oasis (and that).
Low
Dad: “the lemon heads, if you can actually credit it!”
Mum: shrug
My dad had this belief that everything I listened to sounded exactly the same, it was all just “Scagden music”. Wouldn’t matter whether I was listening to Sonic Youth feedback freakout or some gentle Mazzy Star, he would say “it’s all just the same noise”.
The Mud Humpers.
This came up recently and my dad said stereophonics, which to his credit i did listen to in 1999
Another vote for Lemonheads as they were the band that I probably saw most in the early 90s. I remember my dad telling me that he’d seen a poster for an upcoming Lemonheads gig (it was actually the Mighty Lemon Drops) so the name was sort of lodged somewhere.
Probably Radiohead but they know I listen to a lot
and my mom once got me a Black Francis solo EP as a present cause she knows I like Pixies, which was nice
“that band you go to see” (they would mean Mogwai and they would be correct, in fairness)
Dad would have zero idea: maybe just the jazz acts we both like, Portico Quartet or soemthing. Pretty sure he knows I like The Stones tbf
Mum would get most of it - Guided By Voices, The National, Neil Young, Big Thief. Might overlook Modest Mouse and wouldn’t have any idea about the rap I like, but not bad
Dad: Mogwai
Mum: Bob Dylan
Killer Fred. That’s what my mum calls Killer Mike
When my dad was still around he would’ve said Biffy Clyro, tbf to him they were one of my favourite bands when I was 17 and still living with them so I’d give him that
My mum would have no idea
They would probably accurately say Yo La Tengo as I wouldn’t bloody shut up about them all day yesterday
Mum- Interpol (correct)
Dad- probably wouldn’t know
Sub genre, aunties- Hanson (was a massive Mansun fan as a teen, it was misheard once in about 1996 so stuck at that now)
Similarly, I reckon my folks would say Nine Inch Nails and tbf they would probably still be correct if I was forced to choose one artist right now.
Radiohead
“That band with the twins” (biffy clyro) (I haven’t listened to them for nearly 10 years)
I had a conversation with my mum last week asking her not to chuck out some CDs (an unlistened to copy of Zaireeka and a signed copy of Kid A) so she knows I like them bands. Plus she asked specifically about Belle and Sebastian, so she’d say them too.
My dad knows and likes music far more than my mum, but is terrible at remembering anything, especially band names, so he’d have an idea who I like but you’d end up with some mad description of Big Thief or something
