Budapest is great. Heres the itinerary me and my sister did when a few of went last year.

Be very careful how you pronounce the ‘o’ in this.

I feel like you have a story behind this . .

(Also my favourite is that Hungarian for cheese is sájtos- pronounced shite-osh. If you add it to another word the os gets dropped. So takeaways will sell a shiteburger)

You’ll have a great time. I’ve been 3 times, and i’d still like to go back.

EAT at:
Koleves
Mazel Tov
Zeller Bistro

May need to reserve tables but totally worth it.

Tons of great bars and coffee places.

All the turkish baths i’ve been to are great,

Recommend going to Gelert hill at sundown and then walking to the castle area at night all illuminated.

Communism walking tour is pretty good.

There’s a Columbo statue too!

Pinball museum is fun, but don’t go with a hangover…dear god that hurt.

Also szór (sor)= hair vs sör (shör) =beer. Way, way too many words in Hungarian that are only different by one vowel. Like shit and sheet.

Not sure of the spelling, but sor (with the long o) is “shit”

Or maybe it’s szor and it’s the ‘S’ sound you have to be careful of.

hahaha oh yeah szar. Which is pronounced sor. Hungarian, huh?

so:

sör= beer (pl sörök)
szór=hair (pl szórok)
szar= shit (pl szarok)
(and found in the dictionary) szár= plant stem (pl szárak)

Hungarians are really big on good enunciation, for obvious reasons.

Indeed. My girlfriend is Hungarian so I’ve learnt quite a few foul words but have no idea how to write them down.

I bet she’s caught you with the old egészségedré too.

Actually realised I got that wrong after checking with the dictionary-

szőr with a long ö is hair
szór with a long o is sprinkle.

Ah hungarian vowels.

Think Budapest is on the cards for new year.
Anyone been at ny?

budapest booked for new year! WooHoo!!

Egészségedre!

Feel like I’ve been very negligent here not including a picture of the hungarian habit of serving soup inside a whole loaf of bread.

Absolutely! :slight_smile:

What does that mean?

Hungarian for cheers. It’s literally to your health. If you say it a bit wrong it can mean to your arse. Hungarians like to teach it to drunk foreigners.

(Also see above comments about the words for beer, shit and hair being really, really similar)
