Probs wouldn’t feel that comfortable mucking in if I was a new user and also wanted Owen Smith to win the Labour leadership contest, much less a tory or Brexit voter. Think those are the only serious examples I can think of (not that I’m looking to attract tories to the boards obvs)

One weird (to me) thing I’ve noticed over the years is that people who have started a thread on social introducing themselves (e.g. @xylo) have been given a really welcoming reception and become “regulars” almost immediately.

I’m not advocating all new users do that — mostly because I find it all super weird and needy and attention-seeking — but it maybe says something about the forum. Or maybe not.

I thought the point was more that it’s very hard to judge if it’s jokey at all if you’re a new user. I mean some I would hope are obvious (like if you’re having a go at someone for liking toffees in Quality Street) but a lot are only really clearly jokes because you know who’s telling them.

As a parallel some old threads can be dug up from 8-10 years ago where bamos looks like a massive wanker, but at the time there were only a few of us using the forum and 99% of us knew him in real life so it was clear to us he was being satirical.

well yes - if i was a new user and saw people having a meltdown over keeping eggs in the fridge - i probably wouldn’t want to post about a terrible life crisis i was having

I’ll PM you next time someone starts dissing Marvel films bd

what if it was about keeping bread in the freezer?

I was a new user that lapsed. Most of the people I interacted with on the social board were either trolling or referring to people by their real names/old screen names in a way that made conversations very confusing to follow. Anyway, I still come on here a bit and read some interesting stuff. Just not invested the energy to properly interact. I posted in Music a lot more as it seemed easier.

I think the same things that make it a nice community for the people that are very close on here also make it harder to become involved in meaningful conversations for newbies. I don’t think that’s a good or bad thing, it’s just a characteristic.
