Why do you think you're a forum person

I just love the buzz of a positive online interaction

Yeah these are my exact reasons actually

I don’t understand

I assumed that it was a pop at the @bikewankers

Wish I could remember how I stumbled upon DiS.

I just like to chat lots.

started posting on the music forums here a little over 10 years, and for the first time found people with the same interest in music as me (small city). think i found it through a review score that was posted on wikipedia? hardly post at all now because the timezone difference is difficult with work now but drop in to see what’s happening every now and then

Yeah the switch to New DiS did a lot to break the cliqueyness of the old boards - loads of ‘new’ users here had actually been around for ages :raised_hand: , but they hadn’t been ‘let in’ as such

Nationstates was good fun back in the day too, also liked Smogon for incredibly detailed competitive Pokémon chat. This place is probably the best for actual humans though

Forum history goes like this:

Oxegen forum (Shut after posts from it were published in a national newspaper.)
Electric Picnic forum (Ruined by one poster, eventually shut down after everyone good left. Still mates with some people from it.)
Official Flaming Lips forum (Shut after a website redesign.)
Unofficial Flaming Lips forum (Don’t know when it shut but I stopped posting on it after I bled the place dry of bootlegs. Some posters were truly weird on it.)
Unofficial Deerhunter forums ×2 (Barely posted on these, got some amount of bootlegs from them though.)
Old DiS (Signed up in 2014 while at a terrible call centre. Website was blocked for a year or so, started posting again in the last year before the changeover.)
Nü DiS.

I think the first forum I ever posted on was a Bjork one back in 94/95? I was definitely on it in the run up to Post. There’s been all sorts since then, pretty much all music / festival related.

Also can’t really be arsed with in person socialising so interacting with people on here is probably the only thing stopping me from retreating into my own version of reality and speaking to myself only in a language of my own making derived from various screeching and chirruping noises that I find enjoyable to make.

Always done it really, just too Ralph Wiggum IRL. Started posting on usenet in the late 1990s (Manics and anime exclusively), then a bunch of music messageboards, now here and various bits of Reddit for more niche interests. Probably not good for me tho cause I feel invisible 99% of the time.

i was on an unofficial feeder messageboard for ages, that was great. i was on a bunch of yahoo and aim messageboards i think. also a yeah yeah yeahs board that wasnt very active, sometimes lurked on the muse messageboard but it was too busy and intimidating for me. at some point me and my mate made a joint troll account for the feederweb board, then started our own proboards thing dedicated to our stupid troll account that only about 10 people joined, then i ended up on DiS when they reviewed comfort in sound by feeder, then i found the DiS boards from there

I only didn’t say this bc I assumed it was a given with me haha

I dont know many people in real life who still want to talk about obscure record releases or put things into rank order.

Other than that, I’m not sure how much I am. Forum interactions give me way more anxiety than IRL ones.

Same as a lot of others, find it hard to make friends irl, didn’t have a lot in common with people at school. Wasn’t cool enough for people who did like music to be seen with me.

I think the Mansun forum was the first one I went on, was so amazing to chat with people who not only knew, but loved all the same bands as me.

Found DIS quite early on but didn’t read the forums much, as was more involved with the Interpol boards. When that died off lurked on DIS for a few years as the old forums didn’t feel very welcoming.

New forums completely different and have started posting a lot more. I have joined a few Facebook band pages to keep up with news etc but it just isn’t the same as a forum. Doesn’t really lend itself to thoughtful discussion like the politics or SSP threads here.

I just like chatting online, as someone with a visible disability it’s hard to get across how therapeutic it is to be treated as a ‘normal’ person and interact with people without feeling crippling self consciousness.

If I was an aspiring tech entreprenuer with the requisite inherited blood diamond fortune and the ability to spell enterpenurer, I’d definitely make a messaging app more like forums. Imagine a WhatsApp group with yr pals but it’s just a bunch of threads and there’s no pressure to like respond mega timely-like it’d be great

Also a dating app which would be like the same thing but with a red tint over it or something and I’d fuck off some vowels in the title.

Choo-choo, says the manches entpreneupeur train, next stop harvesting all your data and selling it to the highest fascist bidder
