Why is Billy dressed like Emperor Palpatine?

#2281

The Zeitgeist references are to do with the production. Exactly the same: no bass, heaps of top end, vocals too high in the mix.

#2282

I think the chord progression is pretty zeitgeist too

#2283

Freak and Stitch in Time from the Teargarden EPs are both great tracks. Take a few fillers out of Oceania and replace them with those two songs, and you’ve got a quality album

#2284

fair

#2285

These recent posts have made me wanna listen to these new tracks.

Mainly because I’m a massive bitch.

#2286

Am I the only person who thinks Oceania is the best album of 2012? (This is basically a rhetorical question.)

#2287

I hate that I love to hate Billy Corgan nowadays. It’s just… an endless series of bad decisions.

#2288

Probably

#2289

I mean, tramp, attack on memory and the money store all came out in 2012.

#2290

I’m glad you brought up Cloud Nothings because it boggles my mind how Corgan gets attacked for his lyrics on Mellon Collie by people who give Baldi a free pass. (I really like Cloud Nothings, but can you imagine what the reaction would be if Corgan released a song with the lyrics to “Wasted Days”?)

2012 had a lot of great albums (Swearin’, Noctourniquet, METZ, Bloom probably rounding out my top 5), but I genuinely think Oceania beats them all.

#2291

The hot takes are back.

It’s not the best album of 2012, it’s a good post peak pumpkins album… and probably the last good thing Billy will release.

#2292

Lyrics to wasted days are fine, they are direct, have a clear meaning, express a feeling, if only Corgan could manage that nowadays

#2293

FTFY

#2294

Oh I actually agree, I think it’s a case kind of like Downward Spiral era NIN where the directness of the lyrics works because it matches the feel of the music. I just think he gets a free pass from the critics in general for his lyrical style whereas Corgan (and some others) wouldn’t if he wrote the same thing. The moments where he switches from poetic to direct on Mellon Collie are incredible and fit perfectly with the music, but critics hate them.

#2295

I agree though too that Corgan hasn’t been doing that lately. Just compare Glissandra to anything post-Oceania. You can tell that song started with a feeling and then a great song developed around it, whereas with Monuments it felt more like, “This is what I do for a living, here are songs I wrote.”

#2296

Hmm, go and google “Glissandra lyrics” and see what comes up. I’m very, very confused right now.

I know that we are young.
And I know you may love me.
But I just can’t be with you like this anymore.
Glissandra.

She’s got both hands
in her pocket.
And she won’t look at you,
Won’t look at you

She hides true love
En su bolsillo.
She’s got a halo 'around her finger.
Around you.

You know that I love you boy.
Hot like Mexico, rejoice.
At this point I gotta choose,
nothing to loose.

Don’t call my name.
Don’t call my name, Glissandra.
I’m not your babe.
I’m not your babe, Starla.

Don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch.
Just smoke my cigarrette and hush.
Don’t call my name.
Don’t call my name, Tristessa.

Glissandra.
Glissandra.
Gle-ny-sandra.
Gle-ny-sandra.
(Just stop. Please. Just let me go. Glissandra. Just let me go.)

She’s not broken,
She’s just a baby.
But her boyfriend’s like a dad, just like a dad.
and all those flames that burned before him.
Now he’s gonna fight your fight, gonna cool the bad.

You know that I love you boy.
Hot like Mexico, rejoice.
At this point I gotta choose,
nothing to loose

Don’t call my name.
Don’t call my name, Glissandra.
I’m not your babe.
I’m not your babe, Starla.

Don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch.
Just smoke my cigarette and hush.
Don’t call my name.
Don’t call my name, Tristessa.

Glissandra.
Glissandra.
Gle-ny-sandra.
Gle-ny-sandra. [2x]

Don’t bother me.
Don’t bother me. Glissandra
Don’t call my name.
Don’t call my name, Starla.

I’m not your babe.
I’m not your babe, Glissandra.

Don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch. Starla.

#2297

I read he said in a podcast that he has no desire to ‘go deep’ anymore

#2298

Well, that’s depressing, I’d missed that. Guess we have more “with a girl like you, ooh”'s in our future.

#2299

Sticking with reformed 90s bands, all 3 Guided by Voices albums from 2012 are definitely better than Oceania.

(I haven’t heard Oceania)

#2300

Nah. Lame that one…
