it’s probably because it’s the sound that takes the least effort and uses the least muscles in the mouth/tongue so over time has followed the path of least resistance

Think the most common vowel sound is schwa, and the letter E is common for writing it down (‘painter’, ‘driver’ etc), so loads of the Es you see aren’t Es, they’re moonlighting

Was reading about this recently. Think “ee” is one of the first vowels people say in order. Deeper vowels like “u” are last
