Will the vinyl renaissance last?

How many test pressings do pressing plants make, roughly?

Any time pals of mine have gotten records made they’ve had two or three pressings, no more.

Hmmmmmmmmm

Some of the big ones must do more. The amount that you see as giveaways from record store. Wait unless they are pressed as “test pressings” to giveaway :astonished:

In the ‘olden days’ before the vinyl goldrush, test pressings would literally be just that. A handful of copies for the band/managers to check for sound quality and get a preview essentially.

In these halcyon days Test Pressing are the album in a white sleeve, with white labels that cost a fortune. Wouldn’t surprise me if there are real test pressings still used as part of the process.

Yeah we always had to push to get four so we had one each. Really think test pressings these days (or what is marketed as such) are just normal first press with no labels basically. They’ll probably be bundled with NFTs soon

I remember one RSD in Dublin, think it was either 2014 or 2015, and the weather was fucking glorious and there was loads of stuff on. I was the only one of my pals bothered getting up at dawn to queue up somewhere but a bunch of them joined later, we wandered from place to place drinking cans, saw loads of bands, the RAGE on Fade St had a marquee set up and there was also loads of DJ sets in random pubs. Absoutely brilliant day.

that’s great. i happened to be in Dublin for RSD one year and it might have been 2015 actually. was before a Godspeed gig. i didn’t go to many events but Little Gem Records had taken over a bigger building for the day with performances in the basement. wandered downstairs and saw Gross Net, who is from Belfast and who i had thought i’d spotted on the bus down, lol. think i might have stuck around for a bit of someone else as well but i can’t remember who.

Sick Records in Belfast usually had loads of bands playing in the shop even though the shop was absolutely tiny, lots of people inside and outside watching with beers in hand

it closed and there was nothing for a couple of years but Strange Victory (now renamed Starr) was going to pick up the mantle until covid cancelled everything. i’m sure they’ll start it up again when they can as they’ve done a few instores since they’ve opened, and they have a little bit more space than Sick.

It’s very Betteridge’s Law, but every single time I see this thread my brain immediately answers “No”.

Best RSD I had was when this happened

(Voxbox organised loads of bands to play in a band opposite, when it become clear it would be about three times over capacity to see him, Scott just played on the street. It was beautiful.)

posted this on their dedicated thread but the new Black Country New Road LP is €30+ here, but the cd is €8. Don’t think I can justify the extra expense, and I am fortunate to be able to afford it if I wanted to…

Hoping they’ve not edited out Scott being upstaged by the furious ginger cat in the window above.

Seems weird tbh. I’m sure it sold over 250k in the first couple of weeks in the U.S.

Can’t imagine they are struggling to shift that initial 500k worldwide run.

Might just be a store specific thing I guess.

I mean, if it was discounted from $40 to $25, maybe I’d think hey it’s just the retailer

but all the way down to $5? that’s mad

Turns out I still have a photo of that

Definitely weird.

Still £35 in fopp. Didn’t have the Black Country, New Road album though did they.

I know Rumours is used as shorthand for a certain type of vinyl purchase but these numbers are bonkers

Follow a few shops, record collectors etc on Twitter and occasionally I’ll see a post like this and it makes me a little bit sad. These could basically be my records, wonder how come they are being sold.

Some of these are worth a fair bit as well. Hope they got a decent amount from the shop.
