Not that i’ve heard but again, can’t back it up

Yeah, if i order or plan to order a record i generally avoid it digitally to try and retain some of the magic when it turns up…never used to be much of a problem but it is getting more and more frustrating.

I am totally in favour of indie stores getting trade tbh.
The majors is the issue, heck they have their own HMV record store day now and this Love Record Stores day too.
The first RSD had 6 releases. Nowadays there’s hundreds. One David Bowie ‘limited’ RSD release had a pressing run of 10,000 copies.
The whole things fucked.

Imo I think the Dinked Editions are bad. It’s just the big indies wanting a special slice for themselves.
I am much more in favour of the ‘indie exclusive’ pressings that come out every week. Provides a constant flow of income for shops and doesn’t explode my wallet in one day. Actually think labels need to stop doing about 20 variants of albums too (Dead Oceans you pricks!) and just have one for yer hmvs, one for yer indies and maaaaybe one exclusive from the artists shop.
Also while I’m on a mini rant:
RSD going ahead in person in two consecutive months during a Pandemic last year and looking like this year too is so wildly irresponsible.

Just reappreciating this again. What turntable is that?

My turntable was like £20 from a car booty

I’ve got a couple of mk3s. Bought them about 20 years ago when I fancied a crack at learning to mix. Realised I was not going to be a super star DJ, so one deck and the mixer are in storage.

Yes, my turntable was the same for many years too - and I was happy. A holiday was cancelled so I thought I’d upgrade. I got the Technics turntable, Marantz amp, an Ortofon bronze cartridge, Monitor Audio speakers and some decent cable. Have to say it’s completely changed listening to music, so much richer. I’d got use to Spotify in my headphones, so it’s been a great lockdown rediscovering my favourite albums - loud and clear!

This thread today from imprec records doesn’t bode well

Be With Records posted something similar a few months back, I think it was them, saying that plants were now booked until summer 2022.

You can see the issues already Superwolves vinyl
Is coming out nearly 3 months after the album went up on streaming/bandcamp and that’s on Domino

That’s got to start impacting sales hasn’t it,

I honestly don’t know but beyond the system
Is completely broken I haven’t been unable to form a proper thought about it.

Maybe somebody should set up an indies only pressing plant that is standard black vinyl only, standard simple format packaging (if that’s done at the same place). Runs of 300 to 1,000.

Can’t remember exactly where, but I’m sure it’s the UK, a new pressing plant is opening this year.
Heard that on the We Buy Records podcast.

I genuinely looked at this about 7 years ago with a guy I used to work with to the point we were looking at buildings. At the time the main barrier was that nobody was making new record pressers and Jack White, of course, had just imported 3 from Russia to the US for a ridiculous sum think it was like $300,000 or something.

Don’t know if that has changed because it has been the problem ever since you would think someone would have come along and tried to build a more efficient press in the last few years.

Yeah I’m sure I’ve seen about new types of press but doesn’t seem like anything significant is actually happening.

A new one opened in Dublin in 2017. Quick turnaround according to this (if it’s accurate/in date)

Seriously though, the lack of infrastructure is pretty astonishing.

My friend just had his album mastered last month and the vinyl is due out in September I think, seems like a pretty good turnaround compared to most of the other stuff I’m hearing lately. Not sure who he’s using, presuming Dublin Vinyl but maybe someone smaller.

It won’t last much longer if Royal Mail be dicks and throw records over locked gates and then leave them for 3 days baking in the Sun. i mean on what fucking planet is this good delivery. Might as well be Yodel

And Royal Mail won’t let you make a complaint.
