Will you mourn the death of The Greatest Hits album?

Not just yet. Give it time for a few more DiSers to click on jordo’s Radiohead playlist…

As a rule, I like them because they have the best songs on them

They should make a greatest hits album of the greatest hits albums.

I remember a lot of thinkpieces about this when Spoon released one in 2019. I bought the Spoon one specifically because they made it cheap and I got really into them as a result so they still work I guess.

Having thought about it some more I don’t think I will mourn the death of the Greatest Hits album. It’s just not the sort of thing I do

I was listening to Discography just last night and having a right old time.

The right greatest hits could be a great introduction to an artist with a prolific back catalogue. The Underworld singles collection probably stands out as the biggest home run in my book. But that was 21 years ago now (fuck) and in a world where playlists serve the same purpose I can’t think of much reason to get them.

Neil Young - Decade is probably the biggest exception next to Abba Gold and the Immaculate Collection. Legend too, I guess. Sort of undermining my own point, except that I can’t imagine a best-of having anything like that cultural impact in 2024.

If the greatest hits album dies, it’s also the end of the half-arsed new single tacked on the end for extra promo. That’s the real loss here.

I feel for those singles , you’re brought into the world as a greatest hit , you didn’t earn it like your peers. The other greatest hits never truly except you but yet the regular album non hits hate you because of your perceived privilege.

But worst of all you can never be happy in yourself , riddled with imposter syndrome , when you settle down at night in your spot as track 8 on the greatest hits , when you close your eyes , deep down you know your nothing more than a B-side that was in the right place at the right time.

My first thought whenever greatest hits albums come up

I don’t like greatest hits albums, I’m very much an entire album in order person. The only one I’ve ever gotten was the Pumpkins one (never listened to it), and only because of Disc 2 which had a bunch of incredible unreleased material that’s even better than a lot of the hits.

Could be a good sub thread in this, Best Greatest Hits Extra Tracks

Big fan of Ash’s 'Envy", manages to jump the hurdle of being Track 2 on one of the greatest single compilations

think it should be a whole new thread tbh!

Fortune Faded on the 2003 RHCP Greatest Hits would be my pick

They are good for some artists but bad for others. Eg, I would probably pick up one of the Oasis Compilations on CD if I saw it, because I have no need for all their 2000s albums.

But then for an act like the Cure (for example) the greatest hits package is superfluous. I’d rather pick up Standing on a Beach / Japanese Whispers + Join the dots.

I have a Bob Dylan greatest hits CD which is a funny concept. What hits?

I will mourn the death of the Greatest Hits album

I think the ones I’ve got are still playable tho so it’s not all bad news is it

My default reaction is still to (internally) shout ‘SUUUCKS!’ whenever I hear Depeche Mode mentioned

What happened in 13/14?

Dylan is perfect for a greatest hits. A thousand albums of dross, a dozen songs worth listening to.
