Honestly, that movie is still excellent stuff.
I’ll be honest I’m a little ‘hmm’ about the incredible lack of anything remotely original in this trailer but the effects and stuff look decent so hopefully they can pull something decent off.
Oh yeah I’m in. Kilmer’s best role in the original film.
Shame he won’t be back for this given his health. I mean unless they’ve worked out a way for a surprise cameo I suppose.
I wonder if they’ve got Ron Howard in to direct an episode? Seems unlikely but apparently he was the one that announced it was happening so maybe…
Hope so for Ron, trailer looks ridiculous good.
I remember the film so fondly, thinking of signing up for Disney just to watch this.

Sadly EP 1 wasn’t amazing. The editing and pace were breakneck and left it all a bit too chaotic.
I enjoyed it but it felt more like watching these kinds of shows in the late 90s where no one had quite put the right effort in.
Hopefully ep 2 is better
Ugh, didn’t like ep 2 much, particularly the scenes with Willow in, lovely to see Sorsha again but those flashbacks were awful rough stuff. Agree about the late 90’s fantasy vibes, the costume and sets are very generic, also reminded me of Britannia which weirdly used Hurdy Hurdy man on its quite similar credits too, using pop songs feels really bizarre.
I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone but I was entertained enough, it’s a light watch and I’ll stick with as some of the reviews I’ve read say it gets better. Boorman is the standout character for me so far, he’s natural and charming, thank god for him really.
TBH I enjoyed ep 2 a lot more. The direction still felt very BBC tea time, which is to say the strength of performance seems to come down to the actor’s ability to bring out the best in the script.
Davis seems to have been given some of the worst lines but when he’s got the more comic light stuff he is able to relax into it.
Overall it felt coherent and lacked the chaos of episode 1 for me so I took to it more, I think. My wife didn’t think this episode any better, though.
It has a weird thing of being a bit slow and too brisk at the same time.
Not gonna lie i loved episode three, i know its shit and whenever willow speaks i imagine him giving terms and conditions for icelands most popular frozen vegetables, but it was very enjoyable
Not seen episode 3 but Davis’s daughter seems to be a better actor than him (or else it’s because she hasn’t got to deliver the multiple lines of exposition he has). In general I think he’s a good actor (e.g. the original film) so I do tend to lay the blame here at his lines and the director (who’s changed for this episode I think); the bit where he’s trying to get her to say the magic lines correctly in ep 2 was good, hence why I think it’s what he’s asked to say that is very hard to deliver convincingly.
Well episode 3 felt like a huge step up for me. I thought it looked so much better than the first couple which I found a bit sterile, better use of landcape, great to see dust, rain and mud, so much more pleasing to my eyes and more like how I remember the film too. The performances seemed better, I really enjoyed that delightful scene in the sunlit clearing with Hubert and Anne, the change of lighting was a bit confusing, made me think they was some sort of magical enchantment at play like they were a Deadwood version of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry. Really unexpected, I liked that and how anachronistic the whole scene was, all for the show being playful like that.
Okay, felt like episode 5 was the first one where I had no real reservations about editing choices or whatever.
Cool to see another Top Boy alumni in the cast.
Anyway, felt like it worked really well and the cast seemed to have really gelled together.
EDIT: also surprised to find out Jean Marsh is still alive!
Weird action sequence at the start of ep5, more like a game of tag than a flight for their lives. The costuming is outright bizarre in places, modern t shirts? oh trolls talk now and act exactly like they’ve just walked off the Buffy set. I can understand people who wanted something more straight being irked but I’m enjoying the light humour and oddness, don’t think the show will be able to do anything that actually moves me in any way though.
