I often wonder what it is about the British psyche that can’t ever let go of WWII. It’s extremely bleak to think that nothing has happened in 70+ years of peace that has become anything like such a cultural touchstone - certainly not the 70+ years of peace themselves. Millions of people have to die in order for our country to be inspired.

Why don’t brexiteers grasp what leaving the EU means? This is literally what you (Digby not you obv) voted for, to be a third country!

70+ years of war in other countries

read a very good article that claims we never got over winning ww2, i assume linked from here

can’t remember much more about it than that tho

I’ve read some good stuff in the past on OpenDemocracy about the national psyche.

Really needs to get on with it tbh.

‘It beggars belief Corbyn isn’t stopping me from eating children, and let me be clear Krishnan, I’m doing that with pride’

This one?

And they’ve fucked it. Ignore the BBC guy’s rather tepid interpretation of it. This is designed to undermine Corbyn and makes Brexit, especially a no deal Brexit, much more likely.

So Corbyn’s gambit of a vote of no confidence in May as a sop to these clapping seals who need their grand pointless gesture now failed miserably. On the other hand, they would’ve done this anyway. As I keep saying, there’s no good options, no way of circumventing the fact Parliament’s 80% cynical grifters and outright imbeciles. The sheer patheticness of party politics is going to drag us into the abyss.

In a better world, how badly the Lib Dems in particular are failing their voters would be under a much harsher spotlight.

Might be the painkillers, but why?

Tabling a vote of no confidence when you know that you do not have the numbers to carry the motion (because the DUP are not on your side yet, and because no Tory MPs will vote with you), will inevitably strengthen the government and will unite the Tory Party.

Tabling a vote of no confidence like they have done is meant to try and bounce Labour into backing a second referendum now, too early, and is meant to make Labour drop in the polls. Both of those will also strengthen the government.

how come they keep pretending this will happen

It doesn’t really matter why people are saying it (all politics , innit), only that it’s why jumping the gun on no confidence in the government now is mad. You can’t win now, but you might win later.
