I was also nervous about getting started as didn’t have a class or anything so was mostly winging it! I’m about 2 years in now and still learning all the time so it’s definitely a hobby that you always learn and progress at. I’d definitely recommend a beginners sewing class where you go and make a tote bag or a cushion cover and I wish I’d done that but I think mostly you just need concentration skills! I found I didn’t really read instructions properly at the start and didn’t google stuff so stuff I made at the start is crap and out of shape!
As for spending money, I started out on a £50 John Lewis hobby sewing machine! I only got a better machine after about 8 months when I figured out I really really liked it. I did make the mistake of buying expensive fabrics at the start but now I’ve found more reasonably priced places so I can at least try out new patterns with cheaper fabrics then when I’m comfortable with the fit and style, make another version with more expensive fabric.
You can also get 1:1 zoom sewing lessons from people at the moment if in an person class isn’t your vibe due to safety.
One thing I will say is that it has changed my life as someone who took up many hobbies where nothing really stuck. This has stuck and I’ve made new friends and (used to) go to events and everyone I’ve met is so kind and supportive and I find it the most uplifting community!
