Wordle (Part 1)

Ended up doing what I like to call the Octobadger Manoeuvre again, as I just wasn’t going to make any progress otherwise:

Spoilers for NYT mini crossword

Summary

Knowing Sotomayer is a Supreme Court Justice is general knowledge and you either know it or you don’t - I knew who she was but was a little hazy on her first name, thought it was Sandra but once other letters came in it was fine.

Canid is just your basic “X is to Y as Z is to…” logic, you know what a feline is, you know you’re thinking about dogs and cats, canine is right there, so canid follows.

And ABCs… what else do you sing before “Next time won’t you sing with me”? My first answer without context would be “the alphabet” but four letters narrows that down. I had ABCD for a while also thinking the golf clue was drive but it all came together

Re your starting word: you’re welcome

Don’t think I’ve seen the clues for this NYT Mini yet, but…

I know what canine is, but have never heard of canid. :person_shrugging:t3:

Just ABC. Which rhymes with me. No need for the plural. :person_shrugging:t3:

NYT mini 43 seconds but I looked at @hip_young_gunslinger’s summary assuming it would be about Wordle, so that has obviously helped.

Hmmm. I’m either quite out of the crossword loop, but I was certain it had to be a word.

NYT Spoilers below:

Summary

I didn’t understand what a “felid” was, either a type of cat, breed, colour, the options are endless. Without any context, there’s no way to just go “canid” which, as WZA notes, isn’t a word I’ve ever heard of. Like, canine totally. Canis, as in the stars - sure! Canid - nope. Hahaha.

And similarly to WZA, ABCS dosn’t solve as ABCs, a plural I assume, as I know it. It ends simply as ABC, no S, and it’s also not a word. It’s fair game when you can get the rest of the letters, but it not being a word feels like a really bending of the rules to get it to fit.

And, by the by, because I got AB_ _, and managed to fit the lyrics to some sort of melody, I assumed ABBA, because nothing would fit in AB _ S. ABOS? ABIS? ABAS? haha

I guess the USA-leaning of the crossword doesn’t do me any favours - I cannot name any Supreme Court Justices bar the famous Ruth Bader Ginsberg person, and then I know that she’s now passed, but I assume that the person that the NYT is aiming for that lives in the USA would probably know a majority, if not all of them. And the ABCs leaning seems to suggest that that is a factor.

Let’s fight in the playground after school d:D

Have a look at puzzle, in their context as clues with the rest of the grid I don’t think they’re unfair at all.

NYT Mini spoiler:

Interestingly, in the USA, the rhyme isn’t with the “Cs” bit, but the “Z”, as in “zee”.

Hilariously I always start with the same word which is ‘shite’ so today’s was a piece of piss.
