Just out of one of these meetings that make you want to punch a wall because the most senior person keeps asking the same question phrased differently because they don’t like the answer and maybe asking it again and again will rearrange the fabric of reality and give them the answer they want, but because they’re about six rungs above you on the org chart you can’t go “look pal I know what you want to hear but that’s not what I’m going to tell you because it’s not true, stop asking. Cunt.”

Nice to know I can’t escape pretend phishing emails in my new non-office drone existence.

i mean, there’s nothing literally stopping you from saying that …

How much notice do you think your boss/manager should give you before giving you a video call?

Common courtesy would be for a manager to send a message/email first asking if you’re free now. That should give you the opportunity to ask for x minute delay before starting the video call.

i don’t like getting calls out of nowhere, but I’m personally perfectly happy for someone to drop me a message asking if I’m free right now. Might still be unexpected but at least I have a second to gather myself/can ask for a delay if I need it

I think it depends a lot on whether they’ll be arsed if you’ve got your camera off. I always have mine off so I’m fine with short notice calls.

Like @aboynamedgoo says, it would be courtesy to check first, but if it’s in the working day, and you were in the office, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for your manager to walk over to your desk for a face to face chat would it?

Even then only if you’re free. You may be on the phone or talking to a colleague or updating the most complicated spreadsheet in the world, which you may not want to interrupt.

I get no notice, but I don’t answer the call if I’m in the middle of something.

You should set your status to ‘do not disturb’ when you’re treating yourself to a J. Arthur Rank on company time imo. I’m all for it but it’s common courtesy.

I’m quite happy for my boss to see just what a filthy slob I am any time (during work hours) that floats his boat. I wouldn’t want him to miss my looks of disdain when he suggests something silly.

Video calls are much worse for the environment than voice calls as well.

I know I’m no oil painting but even so I’m a bit sceptical a screenshot of me can actually cause crops to fail. Not a lot of them at any rate.

Better being on the safe side, eh?

Fair point.

Just dropped out of a training session on inclusive language because I cannot cope with any more 61 year old men saying they like outdated terms because they’re “more accurate” or that LGBTQI+ people need to be “more tolerant of people who use the wrong terms” because “inclusion is needed by both sides”

My line manager ignoring a question I sent 2 hours ago (which required a yes/no answer), and appearing offline for an extended amount of time. Yet if we don’t reply within 10 mins we get bombarded with messages/if we appear offline for more than a reasonable amount of time we get a phone call. Sorry, very specific but needed to get that off my chest.

If it’s a personal question and you needed a quick answer then I’d take it as a ‘yes’.

Not a personal question reall, about if I could miss a client call (that doesn’t usually require my attendance) I assumed the answer was yes so I did not attend and haven’t heard anything. Annoyingly, this isn’t an isolated incident, it’s a regular thing tbf…
