Kane (and to a certain extent Bellingham) not being part of a domestic rivalry probably does help ensure that you have vibes that don’t become a bit too much toxic north vs south, or manchester vs liverpool. A lot has been said about Jude’s prickly personality but it definitely seems like he’s matured a lot. Kane is clearly massively underrated as a captain and leader, and he completely bought into the Southgate-era vibes/psychology stuff. It’s mad that so much of international success probably comes down to ‘not picking dickheads and making sure they reasonably enjoy being together for a month’

I mean the players were unbelievable, but still pretty impressive how Del Bosque got Spain’s players to get along at the height of the Madrid-Barca toxicity when Mourinho was there in 2012

Probably helped that it was very Barca heavy with a couple of Madrid lads dropped in rather than an even split, but yeah getting two dickheads of the calibre of Pique and Ramos to coexist and function is impressive

I’ve always assumed the sheer churn of managers makes the club rivalry thing less of an issue in national teams - particularly as managers these days seem to be a little less intense than Ferguson, Mourinho etc.

I’m not entirely convinced that club rivals find it hard to get on at an international camp. Dunno why, just sounds a bit bonkers tbh.
Understand it more from a fan perspective, but even though I hated John Terry I bloody love international football. Just a totally different game innit.
