  • Fun, reckless but often quite shit and meaningless group stage football
  • Tense, high pressured but often quite defensive and drab knockout football

Different matches for different… needs

If I was him I’d say I was going to the shop and not come back. No note, nothing. Missing persons them thinking I might be dead the lot.

probs the latter if those were the 2 options but nearly all of the group stage matches have had a lot riding on them, that’s why the current group stage format is so good

This group stage has been brilliant. Most of the football has been technically well below what you’d expect in the Champions League, for example, but also a million miles more entertaining than any Champions League group stage I can ever remember.

Wasn’t really sure what people were voting for when they gave the matches an average of 6 on here the other day? Could live with the standard of the football itself being a 6 but the matches have been way more entertaining than you could possibly hope for

This has been a very good world cup so far and the general shitness of most of the teams defensively makes me hopeful for a pretty good knockout stage too.

Lots of quite stupid things have happened so far which is good and entertaining. Should those stupid things continue into the knockouts would the tournament:

  • Be better as a result
  • Be worse as a result

Problem is that we can already see the so called ‘big’ teams starting to shithouse their way out of groups. France yesterday and to a degree Argentina were classic examples.

Right up until England get knocked out on a farcical VAR decision, better as a result

Last 16 is shaping up nicely for that though. 2 of France, Argentina, Portugal and Uruguay binned off

But a couple of them could have been binned off in the group stage.

Can we all agree that it would be absolutely hilarious if England get knocked out by some sort of VARce?

I’d rather watch France play Argentina than Iceland or Nigeria.

England v Germany. 1-1 after extra time. WIth Germany 5-4 up on penalties after nine kicks the referee controversially goes to VAR and doesn’t award the final penalty. Germany go on to win the whole thing.

Was about to post the same thing - VAR reveals that Jamie Vardy slipped and took a double touch on England’s 5th and final pen

It’ll probably happen after we suffer a defensive injury or two. Phil Jones + VAR = inevitable disaster.

In a startling and frankly completely unacceptable misunderstanding of the rules of the game, the referee demands Southgate himself take the final penalty vs Germany. Low and to the left, Southgate thinks. But Neuer’s seen the footage to 1996 a thousand times. Southgate inconsolable after his miss, but embraced as national hero by loser country and knighted in the Queen’s honours list 2019. Germany go on to win the whole thing.
