Can’t believe people were complaining about a bad penalty decision when it means Portugal might actually go out in the next round now

I would also like this.

Was it that Ronnie should have been sent off?

That and Iran’s penalty (maybe Portugal’s too?)

@colinzealuk
Just watched this.

Alan Shearer seems to be upset that the correct decision was made for Ronaldos non red card and the Portugal penalty?
I don’t get these weird angry middle aged men raging against the machine calling everything ridiculous and making no coherent sense from one point to the next.
God I’m dreading getting to 45

My local branch of Currys was packed to the rafters yesterday afternoon.

Don’t really see how Ronaldo should get leniency because his elbow only glanced the boy in the jaw.

Nigeria vs Argentina the pick of the bunch today then.

There’s been a lot of elbows flying around this world cup and a lot of playacting. Don’t envy referees their job at the moment.

That said, overall standard of officials is as good as I remember it ever being for a WC

Tbf, the ref in the IRNPOR match was awful

VAR anthem

That’s the thing, innit. If the referee’s having a shit game, VAR won’t help him. If he’s having a decent one, it will. It’s not the technology’s fault

Guess it’s just emblematic of getting old, where what they thought they knew is challenged and maybe refuted.

We have new VAR overlords now and we need to adapt as a species

Exactly - had them in separate windows on my laptop. My :eyes: managed fine, but it’s not for everyone. Might feel like half-watching two games instead of watching one, at its worst.

D-Day!

The delirious Danes will be entertaining the fabulous French today.

A point against France will see Denmark qualify, as would Australia’s failure to beat Peru. We will top the group with a victory, obviously.

Denmark and France have met twice in the World Cup, both in the final of game of the group stages - France won 2-1 in 1998 and Denmark won 2-0 in 2002.

Team news

Martin Braithwaite is in line to replace fellow forward Yussuf Poulsen, who is suspended for Denmark after collecting two bookings.

William Kvist will also be missing after breaking two ribs and suffering a punctured lung against Peru.

Fun fact

Kasper Schmeichel was schoolmates with Alex Bruce whose father Steve played with Kasper’s father Peter in Manchester United. Like their parents, Kasper and Alex would later become teammates during their spell at Leeds United.

FODBOLD!

Planning on getting up at 5.30, heading into town to find a pub and watch the second matches. Finally getting to see a match live, lovely stuff.

Obviously my brave Croats have already monstered their group, but very intrigued to see who goes with them, got a soft spot for Argentina purely because I want to see Messi play longer if possible, but then would like to see Iceland qualify too…

Like Martin Braithwaite of Middlesborough FC - couldn’t sound more Scandinavian if he tried :+1:

I apologise everyone, but someone else is going to have to provide the commentary of the less popular early kick off today. I’m sorry to let you all down.
