Not much to report from Belgium’s last friendly before shit gets real - a routine 4-1 battering of @profk’s Costa Rican mates in Brussels, Hazard taking the absolute Manneken-Pis on the counter-attack - and I seem to have burnt through all my Belgium puns ahead of schedule, but looking forward to a World Cup that could potentially have personal stakes beyond the quarter finals stage, what with my allotted team here and adopted country of Brazil. Plus I grew up in France and have Spanish family so I’m basically covered unless Germany win it again…

To some degree i think it’s because of the scheduling. A Champions League or even FA Cup played over a month would be as good for me, and the quality of football probably better. To a lesser degree the magnitude of it as a world event, i guess.

There aren’t many sporting events that i’d say are absolutely must not miss. Maybe…

  • World Cup
  • Home Ashes
  • Superbowl
  • 100m Mens Olympic Finals
  • Heavyweight fights between two huge names
  • Rugby League Grand Final
  • Cheltenham Festival

For me it’s to do with the fact that it’s international teams. Something about countries taking on other countries really gets me going. I care about the World Cup final 100 times more than the Champions League final, even if the quality isn’t as good.

But yeah, the scheduling is one of the main reasons. Wall-to-wall football for nearly 3 weeks is such a treat.
