Worst debut album by an artist who eventually turned out to be great

Bleach is not bad as such but does feel a bit slight compared to nevermind and in utero yes I know it doesn’t count as it’s an ep! Ho Ho Ho Ho

Early Replacements stuff is fine for what it is but absolutely pales compared to what they did at their peak.

I guess loads of the 60s bands where albums were a single padded out with a bunch of dashed off cover versions.

Sufjan - A Sun Came

I like it but yeah I get why you say that.

Agreed. The Replacements didn’t hit their stride until ‘Let it Be’.

The Go-Betweens - ‘Send Me a Lullaby’.

Converge is the first one that springs to mind.

Isis’s debut was OK but nowhere near the majesty of Oceanic or Panopticon.

Sonic Flower Groove (Primal Scream) is pretty shit.

Nevermind was their first album and is rightly seen as a classic

Bunch of artist’s debuts from the 60s and 70s were far from their best. Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Prince, Neil Young, The Beatles… Could go on. Feel like artists just got a lot more time to grow/develop back in those days. Often if your debut is naff now, that’s pretty much it for you.

Two classic mid-00s indie ones:

Deerhunter - Turn It Up Faggot
TV on the Radio - OK Calculator

Door Door by The Boys Next Door before they changed their name to The Birthday Party. Shivers is great obviously but I remember the rest being pretty tepid

Eventually turned out to be something.

Not even Robert Smith singing it ffs. If memory serves me it was recorded live at a sound check, and the label included it against Smith’s wishes.

(Weirdly though when they did some shows playing the album in full they still played it?!? Professionalism)

No because Isn’t Anything is better than Loveless on some days

Remember finding a 2nd hand copy of This Is Your Bloody Valentine in a shop in the US, asking here if I should buy it, and getting a resounding no
