Human Resources. Supposed to be the people you go to if you’re being treated unfairly or want to adjust your working conditions etc, but since they represent the company’s interests rather than the employees’ then they’re usually a fucking nightmare to deal with.

Work in a tiny company now but when I worked in HE it was always ALWAYS finance. Remember one particularly lovely e-mail when I asked someone to phone a student back as they needed hep urgently with their fees to be greeted with a reply from the finance MANAGER saying “We certainly won’t be doing that, it is not our responsibility to contact students” ???

They’re also meant to do all the paperwork and legwork so that new employees are able to start on their official start date, and their team know of their arrival and so can co-ordinate any inductions.

They are awful at this as well.

The person who did my induction here was actually really good and nice, which is why it’s such a shame that she’s the namesake of that person who gets paid to stand at a podium and lie to the White House press corps.

I usually find IT to be a good bunch of lads.

I think they appreciate it if you try and fix stuff yourself before you ask them, and have a passing interesting in tech. I got one guy at an old job to help me do a little hack on my old Apple TV and we were practically best mates after that. Was nice having a guy in a Halo 3 t-shirt roll over from time to time and ask “How’s the old Plexconnect hack holding up? You know you’d be better off with a Raspberry Pi longterm because…” whilst I just nodded.

It was HR by a stretch but IT now wear the crown.
The company recently outsourced our IT to Atos and made in-house/local IT support redudant. It’s Atos ffs, so of course it is a complete shambles, managed overseas by people who have no idea what they are doing.

To be fair, the one time I have worked for a large company, and had to deal with their HR department on my first day, they were so disorganised that they sent me home for an entire week, on full pay, rather than try to sort it out there and then.

It was the first week of the 1998 World Cup, so I just spent the time watching the football in the pub.
