Only been in there once, but it really, really smelled of urine and someone barged into me and made as if I was out to spill their drinks. Atmosphere seemed a bit on edge.

Still, very cheap drinks!

Went in once because it came up as a mystery shop. The boyfriend and I were stuck out like a sore thumb, think it was obvious we couldn’t be genuine customers and we got out as soon as we could. It’s been closed for about two years now as there was just too much trouble.

Just looked at The Waterman - it’s another City Pub Co one - I make that three they’ve opened here in the past year?

This is probably fair. Not as bad now, but when I worked in ‘The City’ in the early 00s, literally 90% of boozers became exposed wood pseudo wine bars along the lines of Slug & Hateful, Wanker & Piano or All Bar Humanity…

Yeah, apparently. I’ll take that over Greene King, at least.

(nobody in the history of anything has ever gone “you know what I really fancy? A pint of Greene King IPA.” The risotto of beers.)

I imagine it’s shutting with The Coronet at the end of the year as well

I’ve generally found that pubs in port towns, Dover, Portsmouth, Southampton etc to all be mental. Partly due to sailors, but also not. People on the coast just seem fucking weird and angry tbh (Bournemouth included, shutupnotmeImsound. Pubs just have a greater air of violence in them than most cities like London)

Demolition of the Elephant & Castle shopping centre has been delayed until 2019, so the pub is likely to stay open for a little while yet.

don’t you work in a boozer?

Is The Coronet staying open too? I love that place

This place was the pwopa rough back in the 00s. Popped in at lunch time when flat hunting fresh out of uni, and there was a real moment of realising that this is the real life.

fucking love the elephant and castle shopping plex.

The one by Fen Ditton? I went there (admittedly 10 years ago) and it was fine. Did quite a decent burger if I recall correctly.

lets not get all dodgy pubs, lads.

Very much depends on where you go in Portsmouth tbh tbf:

Guildhall Square/North End = I like fighting every bit as much as I like drinking

Southsea = an absolutely cracking selection of ace pubs…

Yeah. Felt a bit uncomfortable with the rant about it because it’s got a distinct air of “it’s a travellers pub now” to it.
