The comment made by someone was something weird and ridiculous like “He’s a peadophile but no one knows” and thus I was pointing out how stupid this was because if NO ONE knows then he’s not committed any sort of crime at all. And thus represents the ‘best’ type of such person you could hope to see.

THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS.
You can commit a crime, and someone (aka THE VICTIM) knows you’ve committed said crime, but if you’ve not come out (as the victim) to say anything or report it, A CRIME WAS STILL COMMITTED.

Same can be applied to rape and sexual assault. Just because no one knows someone has done something. doesn’t mean the crime wasn’t committed.

I’m not sure you can compare it to murder because murder is a crime, but being a paedophile (as defined- someone who is sexually interested in children) is not a crime.

Of course, it’s a crime to commit certain acts involving children, and it’s a crime to download images of that nature. but to harbour sexual desire for children is not in itself criminal. It’s how that condition manifests itself that can be.

I don’t think that being sexually interested in children is something that many if not most/ all of these people can help. I’m not sure you can say it makes them bad people. Acting on it, of course, does make them bad, even if their behaviour is driven by something pathological that is not their fault (e.g. a background of sexual abuse in their own young lives.).

Was his point not that if ‘no-one knows’ then there can’t be a victim (because obviously the victim WOULD know) and therefore means there IS no victim/s which implies no crime/s committed?
