In my previous job I got to boss people about and tell them what work to do, but didn’t have to line manage any of them. That was a beautiful sweet spot.

Yes I think you have to start seeing people as resources and be use yor time sparingly.

Yep - we’ll see if I like it as well! I might hate it. Staff development is where it’s at - when you see people grow in their role it’s really rewarding

Not having a pop at you, or anyone, but direct reports is the most Tory phrase ever and seems to be far more in vogue than I have noticed before.

In my case, would never want to be in management as am too morally pure and am making a shit load in computers as a developer for a very niche system that will definitely last forever

I do , but I don’t like the HR side of things

In my organisation we had a reorg a couple of years back. One of the things we had to do was reduce the number of contractors (mostly IT obviously). So the solution was to hire them permanently, but in order to keep paying them enough to keep them that meant making them management grades.

So now we have senior managers whose idea of a good weekend is a bit of LARPing.
