Wuthering Heights

You’re a DiSer.

You probably don’t like Emerald Fennell and have probably posted as such in the film threads. There’s a good chance you’re actively not looking forward to this film. But dear lord a lot of us will end up seeing this film and posting about it in spite of that, so let’s have a separate thread.

Already feels like a weird film, probably the biggest ‘event’ release in a while and early indications seems like it’ll get broadly panned critically but do really well commercially.

Hearing Martin ‘Clunesy’ Clunes is in it has genuinely piqued my interest a bit, hoping for some of the best “oh, it’s them from British TV” since Phil Wang and Issie Suttie were sharing scenes with Chalamet in Wonka.

Thought Promising Young Woman didn’t quite hold together but had some interesting stuff in it. Hated Saltburn so much it made me hate PYW more in hindsight.

This will be utter shite, might go see it

Huge fan of Wuthering Heights, it’s the only classic novel I really love. Love how Fennell’s films look, don’t love her writing. Absolutely hated everything I’ve seen and read about this film. I am consumed with disdain for it, I cannot stop reading negative reviews and commentary

I always thought it would be a shitshow but the scene they’ve released was somehow worse than what I was already expecting. Received Pronunciation blonde iPhone face Cathy with all the acting chops of a plank, an Oktoberfest style dress from Shein and stilted dialogue… just so unbelievably, unwatchably shit.

Sounds like everything interesting has been taken out of the source material and it’s just a poorly costumed soft porno (no issue with anachronistic outfits/music - I fucking love Marie Antoinette - but there’s no coherence, it’s just a big old mess)

Feel very vindicated that all the “You idiots, it’s obviously meant to be a self insert framing of a woman reading Wuthering Heights and imagining it’s about her” commentary in the run-up is wrong

Feel nauseous that the rumour that there’s a scene in which a man who is executed has an erection and everyone goes into a sexual frenzy about it is true

Anyway, hope everyone who goes to watch it has a lovely time!

I like that the poster makes it look like a Mills and Boon novel.

I’ll come back with some other nice things to say about the film when I think of any.

I don’t know anything about the film other than that Mrs Pony wants us to go. The book is just horrific, obviously. It’s one of those novels that reads very differently at different ages I think. Funny that some consider it romantic; makes me wonder if they have read it.

I saw a trailer that featured the words “Yearning is so back” and decided this probably isn’t for me. Also for the sake of completeness I’ve never read the book and think the song is dead annoying.

Her films are incredibly flawed and I hate them. I’ll be seeing Wuthering Heights a week on Sunday

My friend wants to go so I was going too and I just saw a one star review and now I’m looking forward to it.

I think I remember there was a bit in one of the trailers that’s like when TikTok chefs finger their food and slap bits of dough. So I think it’ll be trying to be provocative but be really tame and cringe. I’m filing it as part of charli xcx’s broader cultural decline

don’t care about the film, I am absolutely here for the #Clunaissance though

Not excited about her upcoming starring role in the Faces Of Death remake?

I saw the trailer earlier for the one where she’s on holiday with a boyfriend, or something and her acting wasn’t so bad. but then I saw an advert for something with Rachel Sennott and it was horrible again

Favourite Clunes film

Love the 12 year gap between films and the choices. Roll on 2038!

Could they really not have found a cat to play the role of Heathcliff?

Still casting white dudes as Heathcliff too

Staggered is a remarkable rip-off of Dancing Queen except without the Helena Bonham-Carter character and, crucially, Martin Clunes not being Rik Mayall.
