So how is everyone getting on with their winter comps? Nice go see a lot of traffic on this thread, and I’ve had my best return of any disc swap so far with 5 sent out and 4 good ones received (with one more promised).

Is it time to start up another one or should I give this one a but dead and thoughts more time to wind down? Happy to go with @mroc 's sounds of the apocalypse idea for a theme for the next one. Or a while back I suggested Songs of Love and Hate to coincide with valentines (and belatedly Leonard Cohen’s death). Or something else?

Oh the love and hate idea sounds way better thought out

Don’t mind waiting til Feb as I’ve three winter mixes to really get into properly. On that basis, Love & Hate would be good, but then it’s always handy to have an apocalypse mix ready for when that buoffant buffoon triggers WWIII.

Aloha - The track on my mix is taken from Some Echoes which would be a good place to start. It’s a bit more structured than earlier releases but if you like the looser almost jazz elements to Ice Storming then go with either Sugar or The Great Communicators.

Braids - I’m a big Braids fan so I would say get all three releases so far. First release Native Speaker is more guitar based, they then lost a member and ditched the guitars for a darker sound on Flourish//Persih. Deep In The Iris is a nice mix of the two. Highly recommend going to see them live too.

Love.Stop.Repeat. - Don’t know that much about them. Came across them at Green Man and picked up the two albums they were selling - Remembering & For Everybody Who Got Left Behind. Storm song is a good representation of both.

Ohbijou - Black Ice is from Beacons. I think it was their UK debut and then they did one more and split up. A decent enough album that maybe drags a little towards the end.

I wanted to put a few instrumentals through the mix and actually chose Au Revoir Simone over múm in the end although it was due to the length of the track more than anything else.

Yeah if you didn’t like that Goldenboy song don’t go any further. I think I bought if after reading Elliot Smith was involved.

Glad you found a few new bits to investigate as I did with yours. I guess that’s what this is all about. Another recommendation for Hood too so I really need to check them out!

Brilliant, thank you. Seen a few recommendations for Outside Closer so think I’ll start there.

Ah that will be it. Pretty sure I’ve checked that out at some point.

Will definitely add Dilly Dally to my list then.

Thank you, Instant Coffee Baby now purchased!

@si_2001 sorry for my delayed response. Here are the ones that I enjoyed:

Gene Clark is quite nice
I love Mew - can’t remember why this song didn’t make my mix
AR Kane - I don’t quite like the singer’s voice, but the song/tune/chorus is fun and catchy. Would love to hear a cover of it by someone else perhaps.
Alaska In Winter - I have their (first?) album Dance Party In the Balklans, but not heard anything of theirs since that. Nice to hear them again
Broadcast - this song was on one of the other winter mx cds I received, and liked it then also. Never really listened to them despite seeing their name a bit, so shall investigate.
Midlake, Low and Kings Of Convenience, and Tom Waits I all know, but not heard much of. Really like their songs, but the Low song is my favourite, really beautiful. I only have (and love) their xmas ep, but haven’t been interested in the few other bits I’ve heard since then.

and thanks for the bonus Korean music cd - still have to give that a listen though, but hopefully today.

Excellent, thanks for these recommendations @DustyNothing, I’ll check out those you’ve recommended starting with Aloha and Braids I think.

Yeah, Hood are great. Haven’t listened to Rustic Houses or Cycle of Days and Seasons for quite a while, but I remember them both being good albums. Cycle of Days and Seasons is less structured than their later works, but it’s a lovely headphones album to get lost in. I used to have Cycle of Days… on cassette and eventually it got pretty warped. If anything it probably added to its wonky charm. I think Outside Closer and Rustic Houses are better starting points though.

Just back after a few weeks away & had CD from @TVDenimChap waiting for me
Very interesting mix that opens with a great Opeth tune, then a nice electronic vibe for a few tunes & an epic metal track by Insomnium before I almost crashed the car as Last Christmas came on immediately after  followed by Aphex… Certainly very eclectic.
Wasn’t so keen on Immortal & The Sword though to be honest.
Overall, great mix… Bit of irreverence chucked in too! Fair play.
I must check out BadBadNotGood in more detail as I don’t know any of their stuff, did a quick google search & saw that they’re associated with some artists that I love (Earl Sweatshirt, Ghostface) and must also shout out the TIm Wheeler instrumental which is lovely.

I sent out 5 and got 3 back so not sure if a couple got lost along the way.

Must say the general quality of the 3 discs was excellent. Have been introduced to quite a few artists & the flow of each worked really well.
@paulo13 I’ve delved into Laura Gibson’s catalog off the back of your mix, great to be introduced to an artist through these exchanges & I’ve really enjoyed checking her stuff out so thank you!

Glad you liked it! Thought The Sword was a bit of a long shot, but glad Wham had the intended effect

I’d highly recommend BadBadNotGood’s latest record, stand out tracks for me are Time Moves Slow, Confessions Pt II and In Your Eyes if you want to dip in quickly. The record with Ghostface is great too. And I’m a big of fan of Tim Wheeler’s solo album, so would recommend too!

Hey TV Denim, I got your mix too! Lovely cover, but I’ve not yet listened to it because of the Wham track. It’s a VERY good song, but I simply cannot listen to it when it’s not December.

I could skip it. I’ll skip it.

Haha, I’d understand if you’d rather leave it until next Christmas.

Some long overdue feedback (sorry Christmas then a busy period at work got in the way). Thanks to everyone who sent me a Winter mixtape. I got four for some reason, but only sent three.

In no particular order:

@si_2001 Really liked yours, which was full of unexpected twists and turns. The Gene Clark song is lovely and a great starter. I’ve never knowingly listened to Tom Petty before, and won’t be rushing to again, but that song is ok. I love AR Kane and you remind me I should listen to them again. The part of your tape I particularly liked was the middle when it goes all avant garde with John Maus, The Creatures, Alaska in Winter, Faine Jade - superb stuff. The last third is all stuff I know and love. The Broadcast and Midlake tracks were both on my tape and the Kings of Convenience song was a near miss. I would have had Listen the Snow is Falling as well but it was too long (I had Snowstorm instead). Full marks for using the live version which is even more ace than the original. I love Low and Long Way Around the Sea is wonderful - I have to pull you up in that it is a Christmas song (and hence banned) and also not remotely about winter. I had Last Snowstorm of the Year on my tape. Tom Waits song is lovely and a really clever way to end it.

Thanks also for your Korean tape which was unexpected and really great. I found it really fascinating and I would love to know more about it - I’ll send you a DM.

@dollarsandcents your scored highly for being largely made up a genres that I like but don’t listen to enough - hip hop and instrumental, bass-heavy electronica. I pretty much liked it all, but I would say I preferred the hip hop, both the stuff I knew already (Ka, Chance the Rapper) and that I didn’t. The electronica was a little more hit and miss for me - it perhaps didn’t quite work for me because I tend to listen to these tapes in the car and I maybe needed to give it more attention. I liked it all well enough but sometimes the tracks blended into each other a little too much for me. That said I absolutely loved Pea Souper by Commodo - perfect for recent driving conditions too. My other favourite track was Ice Cold by Ocean Wisdom etc. I’ve never heard of either of the artists and both tracks are superb - that’s the whole point of these tapes for me so thanks very much.

@paulo13 very strong work with again lots of stuff I have not heard before. You had one track that was on my tape (Jens Lekman) and one near miss (Darren Hayman). Of the stuff I didn’t already know I particularly liked Laura Gibson - that song is amazing, and also The LK and Fredrik. Again, full marks for finding four or five artists I’ve never heard but really like.

@Trev yours was very strong at creating an atmosphere with things like Grouper, Mazzy Star and Dirty Three but also shaking it up with Faust and The Fall and the like. I’m pretty familiar with all of your artists (although not necesserily the songs you chose) but it’s still really interesting to see how you put it together. The run from Grouper to Papa M is particularly strong and the last third is really well compiled with Codeine and Beth Gibbons providing a really clever bridge from Unwound and The Fall into Johnny Cash and Gillian Welch. Thanks for a really enjoyable tape.

Wow, thanks for that great feedback. Really glad you enjoyed the mix. You definitely got the vibe I was trying to capture & seeing as we seem to share similar tastes it’s nice that you weren’t overly familiar with everything on there.

@TVDenimChap - thanks a lot for your mix. Sorry for the slow feedback, been a bit hectic since Christmas. Plenty here to enjoy - particularly on the opening 15 minutes where there’s a really good run of songs. I liked those first songs a lot. I bought an early Chris Clark record years ago, but had lost touch with his output and enjoyed the song you included very much. The Yutaka Minobe and Takayuki Maeda one was good too - google just returned a bunch of virusy looking links from those search terms, but am I right in thinking that it’s from a videogame soundtrack?

You lost me for a bit at the Insomnium song - metal just doesn’t do it for me and I couldn’t get past the cookie monster vocals. Same for the other heavy song - The Sword I think?

Of the songs I didn’t know on the second half, I enjoyed Tim Wheeler, The Oh Sees and that Charli XCX song was excellent. I was familiar with her name, but hadn’t heard any of her music before. I’ll give her album a listen on the basis of this - hopefully it’s not a one off.

Given that the mix is just one track, the songs were unfamiliar and largely instrumental I got a bit lost in places keeping up with which track I was listening to. Last Christmas provided something of an anchor point and so I worked back a bit to reorient myself. I can’t bear that song, but it helped a lot in this instance! Thanks a lot for sending

@Prob500 maybe a couple more weeks before another round? I’ve still got a mix to absorb and feedback on and potentially another mix still to come from this batch.

Love/sex/heartbreak might be a good theme for part 5 - I’m sure there will be plenty of interesting takes on these hoary old topics in our record collections.

Bit too wide perhaps.

I’ve always thought there is a good mic to be made on the subject infidelity/cheating/jealousy.

Yeah, maybe but I’m not sure I could stomach a full cd of songs about any one of those themes either! Too gushy, icky or whiney respectively - though each is fun in moderation.

Thought general matters of the heart might tie in nicely with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.

The challenge is to take the theme and do something varied and interesting.

Not much challenge in ‘love/sex/heartbreak’ as that covers about 90% of all songs ever!

I know that. I just figured that there might be some more unusual takes on these topics in Dissers collections, which would be the challenge. Nobody’s going to want to make something that looks like a supermarket valentine’s day cash in.

I don’t know that there are necessarily that many songs on the subject in my own collection to be honest so it could have been fun making it interesting. Never mind, it was just an idea. I’m happy to go with whatever prob settles on.
