This gives you an idea of how they move. It’s just that all the ones in the UK are empty nowadays, so you only ever see the frame.

We referred to them as Gasometers when we were kids (with a tacit acknowledgement that it wasn’t the actual name for them). There used to be one just near where I grew up. It used to go up and down as different amounts of gas were stored. There’s one in East Brighton too, but that’s just a metal skeleton these days (and has been for as long as google street view has been going).
