We referred to them as Gasometers when we were kids (with a tacit acknowledgement that it wasn’t the actual name for them). There used to be one just near where I grew up. It used to go up and down as different amounts of gas were stored. There’s one in East Brighton too, but that’s just a metal skeleton these days (and has been for as long as google street view has been going).
