Your Favourite Long Long Players

Yup it’s nearly Listmas. Surprisingly, 7 of my current top 15 albums of this year are over an hour long, which got me to thinking what my pre 2016 favourites where, as in which ones didn’t feel long or felt good feeling long. Putting an arbitrary length of 70 mins on it, my top 5 would be

Godspeed YBE! - Lift Your Skinny Fists…
Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousnnes
The Humble Bee - Morning Music
Modest Mouse - This is a Long Drive…
Mark Kozelek & Jimmy Lavalle - Perils From The Sea

Clouddead - Clouddead & Nils Frahm - Spaces just miss the cut.

For what it’s worth other than Max Richter Sleep (which I doubt can be beaten) at 8 hrs and Basinski’s Disintigration Loops at 5hrs, Kyle Bobby Dunn & the infinite sadness is the longest in my collection clocking in at 2hrs9mins49secs and just pipping the 2 big Stars of the Lid albums.

Give me some of your favourites that at least clock in over an hour and 5.

I’ll have a think about this but just wanted to say Deathconsciousness is amazing!

absolute stunner isn’t it, and nothing quite like it - great Vinyl package too if you’re in to that kinda thing.

Kamasi Washington’s The Epic is an obvious one - it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a TRIPLE album praised BECAUSE of its length, rather than in spite of it.

See also - Have One On Me - Joanna Newsom.

…and the last three Stars of the Lid albums.

Been revisiting the White album these days
Tusk is also pretty great

When pop acts go that long, filler does seep in- but filler is always fun!

69 Love Songs is the obvious choice. Even the few slightly half-baked songs add to its overall appeal

Incredible hit to miss ratio mind, barely any real clangers at all

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Kanye - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Bloody love both those records.

Also, Be Here Now is stupidly long, and while I wouldn’t make any claims for it being particularly good, I do enjoy sticking it on every now and then.

Mogwai - Come On Die Young

such a builder, every song just creates the atmosphere for the next

not sure i have many 70 minute albums, but an hour or more:

The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
Mogwai - Come On Die Young
Arab Strap - Philophobia
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

generally have a thing for shorter albums but those ones use their length well

new Goat album as well, though i’d be willing to part with a song or two

Yep… there are some relatively unremarkable songs in the first half but you’re right, it builds beautifully. I can’t think of a better album-closing trio than Ex-Cowboy / Chocky / Christmas Steps. (I know that there’s an outro as well but I’m not counting that).

Love long guitar albums:

Lift To Experience - Texas Jerusalem Crossroads (93 mins)
Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing… (77 mins)
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You (74 mins)
