5) The Dandy Warhols @ The Electric Ballroom
4) The Cult @ Brixton Academy
3) Underworld @ The Roundhouse
2) Ennio Morricone @ The O2
1) Lush @ Oslo

Ignoring festivals - can’t necessarily remember that much of what I saw tbh tbf…

Meet Me in St Louis is the main one that stands out for me. Will be hard to top.

Nils Frahm @ Barbican
Manic Street Preachers @ Royal Albert Hall
Hackney Colliery Band @ Wilton’s Music Hall
Courtney Barnett @ Somerset House
Nonkeen @ Village Underground

  1. Holy Roar X (cheating I know but it was aces and pretty much all the bands I saw kicked arse)
  2. Drive Like Jehu @ Lido
  3. Otoboke Beaver @ The Pipeline
  4. Jambinai @ Corsica Studios
  5. Tricot @ Hoxton Sq

Probably can’t count ArcTanGent even though it was the best.

Hoping if I just say Ed Harcourt @ The Deaf Institute I’ll be granted special favour in these parts.

Iggy Pop @ Royal Albert Hall, London - Not only the best gig i’ve been to this year, but one of the best i’ve ever been to.
King Khan & The BBQ Show @ Hare & Hounds, B’ham
Melt Yourself Down @ The Rainbow, B’Ham
Saul Williams @ The Institute, B’Ham
Moon Duo @ Hare & Hounds, B’Ham

FOTL and Rolo Tomassi @ St. Lukes

no others I care to mention

The Bug + Miss Red @ Corsica Studios
Skinny Girl Diet @ The Garage
Bo Ningen @ Sea Change
Bleached @ The Moth Club
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs @ Fun House, Electrowerkz

Drive Like Jehu
Beach Slang
Jesus & Mary Chain

Shobaleader One, Islington Assembly Halls. Fierce prog-rock for dancing to, Squarepusher with a bass like a tank going through ten mac-routed pedals (he played a piano solo on the bass at one point ffs) with a tight band including the unbelievable drummer from Three Trapped Tigers.

King Crimson, invite only in Aylesbury, a wonderful surprise, just as skronky as anything at these left-field jazz-rock festivals I go to. Nearly three hours & I wanted to go to all the next three nights.

Martin Creed, Moth Club. Less of the angular song-deconstruction ad absurdam, more quirky and cutesy, as lovable as ever, a national treasure.

Meet Me In St Louis, The Dome. A decade after I first saw them at the Windmill, when they were ferocious, in the middle of everything, it was the greatest thing I’d ever seen - they were the most welcome reunion; amazing and odd to see such a response from people who’d never seen them before.

Trupa Trupa, Cafe Oto. I’d waited ages for this Polish psych-rock band to come over & they were worth it.

Ty Segall - Forum
Fat White Family - Coronet
Thee Oh Sees - Coronet
Massive Attack - Brixton

Iggy Pop at the Fillmore Miami Beach.

Kamasi Washington- Royal Albert Hall

Titus Andronicus- Primavera Porto
Brian Wilson- Primavera Porto

Sonic Boom @ Oslo
The Vacant Lots @ Shacklewell Arms
Cavern of Anti-Matter @ The Moth Club
The Heads @ The Ruby Lounge
The Coathangers @ The Moth Club

I was at The Coathangers gig too. Great fun.

Converge @ Electric, Brixton
Ringo Deathstarr @ The Bullingdon, Oxford
Blacklisted @ The Underworld
Beach Slang @ Dingwalls

can’t really remember any others. That might be it for this year so far.

Shit yeah that was good.

I may need to rethink some things. I also loved Mamiffer at that show an awful lot even if everyone later told me it was boring. I DISAGREE.
