best part of any Radiohead gig is when Jonny pulls out his radio

It’s funny that the Mercury Prize nominated Amnesiac rather than Kid A (and I say that as someone who really likes Amnesiac) - or maybe they only submitted the former?

Took me about five reads of that first sentence before it made sense. Why can’t they just call it autumn like us sensible brits?

Still remember listening to Kid A, having been a big fan of the Radiohead CDs (and in the case of OKC, tape) that I’d nicked from my dad. Listened to it on the PS2 music player coming out the dinky CRT TV and had my whole world changed as I watched that weird little cube rotating

You can shit all over EIIRP, fail to see the beauty in the noise of the National Anthem and miss the point entirely with Idioteque but how…how…HOW can you fail see and feel the utter devastation in ‘How to Disappear’?

Still annoyed my CD didn’t have the hidden booklet. Someone must have knicked it out the shop ( Dam you Our Price). I remember a friend finding and talking about it. I went home from school and opened mine only to see emptiness in the CD case and subsequently in my heart.

Even with the wee cartoon bloke staring through the CD tray teeth, it took me months to realise there was a booklet back there. :grimacing:

I love this album and think it’s a classic… but you might be right

I think the Bends just about gets the masterpiece label as well

Kid A is great. I shall listen to it tonight.

My personal Kid A story: I was in my 3rd year of uni at St Andrews when it came out, and excitement was high amongst certain parts of my friendship group. One mate asked me “do you think we should reserve copies in case Fence (the wee indy record shop in town) runs out?” I was all “nah, they’ll have plenty copies in.” Turns out I was wrong, 'cos when I got to Fence on Monday afternoon they’d sold out. Oh well, I thought, trotted 5 minutes up the road to Woolworths and bought it there instead. Next day I saw my mate and he was absolutely raging at me. “YOU SAID FENCE WOULD HAVE PLENTY COPIES AND THEY’D SOLD OUT! I HAD TO GET THE BUS TO FUCKING DUNDEE TO BUY IT!” he moaned. “Why didn’t you just go to Woolies instead?” I retorted. His expression was a joy to behold; he genuinely hadn’t considered this simple option. “I’m a fucking idiot,” he said. “Yes, you are,” I said, and I left it at that.

I got as far as when he claimed Karma Police and No Surprises sound identical. Music journalists used to try very very hard didn’t they?

I just knew someone would say this

I put the other 3 on 10/10, Bends on 9/10…

I think the album tracks at least have dated a bit (could be the production, but I like how it sounds) and they aren’t as strong as on the other albums. But plenty of absolute classic tracks on there no doubt

It was the beginning of the time where p2p downloading let you take things further… I had been listening to an early live run out of How To Disappear and a session of Motion Picture Soundtrack for some time before the album landed, and loved both dearly.

It didn’t land on first play but after what Ok Computer had done for me I just played Kid A three times over. I do remember thinking they had made the above two songs sound worse from what I had heard beforehand.

I think it was Everything In Its Right Place where it first clicked. I was going through some stuff and having anxiety attacks those days and that treated keyboard sound they got there just soothed me. With the lyrics it was like… “youve been going a bit nuts but don’t beat yourself up about that, its ok”

And the other tracks fell into place one after one.

I wish they’d had the sense and boldness to put The National Anthem as a single.

Never quite really clicked well with Optimistic. Slightly too US college radio for my years.

I found this album really confusing when it came out: I was definitely not ready for it. Even now I think it’s over-rated, and admire the bravery in making such a left turn and defying expectations more than like the music. I probably prefer The Bends, In Rainbows, Hail To The Thief and maybe even Amnesiac.

I remember reading loads of stuff about Motion Picture Soundtrack before ever hearing it, i think it was in their live sets for a good while. Anyway when I heard it on Kid A, what an anti-climax

They opened with Optimistic when I first saw them saw them play, back in the tent tour, so it holds a special place. That said, i do love it and it helps make Kid A what it is. Especially starting Side B or bringing it back after Treefingers

Haven’t listened to it in years. The bad reviews of it are massively cringe, I’m not really certain anyone can mount a convincing attack on kid A
