2023 Mercury Prize thread

They’re announcing the shortlist next week - who will be on it? Who deserves to be but won’t be? Who doesn’t deserve to be but will? Who will the token jazz nominee be? And will Little Simz win two years running?

They’ll have PJ Harvey on it but it’s not anywhere near the class of her winning albums.

Swear this thing happens 3 times a year.

Think there’ll be multiple former nominees/winners this year: Jessie Ware, Young Fathers, Arlo Parks, PJ Harvey all released decent to great albums.

Can see Everything But The Girl or Suede getting a legacy act nod too.

Lankum or Rina Sawayama for one of the newer acts probably.

As usual excitement levels across the board about the awards will decrease 10% on last year.

I assume I Love You Jennifer B will be shortlisted. Maybe Anohni again, though as mentioned there’s quite a few past nominees/winners eligible this year and they can’t all get in

give it to Young Fathers

Feel like Lisa O’Neill could make it on this year

Anna B Savage must be in with a shout

Blur might squeak in.if its not too late,

Maybe Baxter Dury or Squid.

Be surprised if no Loyle Carner. Good album, very much in the mercury sweetspot.

Be surprised if Young Fathers, PJ Harvey, Daughter and Nabihah Iqbal didn’t make the list.

Maybe Biig Piig? Jockstrap (could win it?)? Lucinda Chua? Overmono? Billy Nomates? Rozi Plain? Hamish Hawk? Orbital? King Krule?

Are Dream Wife eligible if lead singer is Icelandic? Not sure if James Acaster’s Temps has too many international names on it?

Be a shame if Depeche make the list for that average album but they’ll need some high profile names on the list I suspect.

Always interesting to make a list and then glance at AnyDecentMusic to see what got good reviews in last 12 months

It’s because the shortlist gets as much coverage as the winner (if not more sometimes)

Lankum would be my pick to win but I don’t think they have the right profile looking at the winners for the last decade. Loyle Carner as mentioned above would definitely be.

Maybe they’ll get nominated though. Definitely deserve to.

Tom Grennan will be nominated. Don’t know who he is or what he sounds like but he’s been on fucking everything lately.

Ol’ Capaldi, he’ll be there too.

NGL I had to think really hard to remember what won last year, and I liked that album a lot.

Would be nice if Brighde Chaimbeul got the token folk/jazz nod but the actual winner will be something dull like Squid or Sleaford Mods.

How have the winners of the last ten years indicated that’s likely?

I’d be happy for Loyle Carner to win, sure he’ll be nominated.

For jazz, my favourite elgibile records would be either Work Money Death, Tom Skinner or (if eligible) Mestizo. But I feel they’ll put Shabaka up before he hangs up his sax for The Comet is Coming - maybe time for the elusive jazz win even?

SAULT’s five album dump probably works against them? Think Earth would be my pick if they are getting a single album nod.

Other albums I’d like to see considered: Yazmin Lacey, James Holden, Clark, Hudson Mohawke, Greentea Peng, Decius, Kai Whiston, Surgeon, Beth Orton.
