Aphex Twin is top.

All of the albums so far are very good indeed, apart from that Glassjaw one which I can’t be arsed with, and most of King Crimson, but 20th century schizoid man is good enough to carry the rest of it, so that’s great.

These are my opinions, and I stand by them.

So is it a-pex or a-phex? Please advise

Aphex - never realised there was any debate?

Might be because your post above says Apex.

Well I always just said a-phex but my partner was adamant it was a-pex and she’d never thought any different

One of my top Aphex tracks that one. Alberto Balsam too ofc

I spelt it wrong earlier.

ICBYD > RDJ for me. Ventolin is purposefully horrid. Great record.amber is better than all of it tho imo

Yeah, got a lot of love for I Care Because You Do. It’s probably on the bottom rung of full Richard D. albums but that still puts it miles above a lot of other stuff. It feels a bit like a blueprint for the RDJ album at times but there’s so much lush stuff on there; Alberto Balsalm, Acrid Avid, Icct Hedral.

Then we got to talk about the Velephant in the room. Ventolin gets harder and harder to listen to as I get older, which is weird because I thought that the loss of frequency response through ageing would insulate me from its aural horrors but goddamnit, it’s worse than ever. I have a whole fucking remix EP of that shit.
Teenage Yvash was invincible. I’m not.

At least the dogs next door stopped barking.

Ah. Autocorrect for the win. Need to train it better on my music tastes.

I’ve always though Aphex is the biggest case of Emperor’s New clothes in music. Just rubbish, but I liked this album. Even as hungover as I was listening to it. So yea. This is good stuff. :+1:

I didn’t realise everyone hated Ventolin. Obviously it’s very harsh and I guess if the piercing sounds are too much then I get the whole thing could be pretty excruciating but I like it. Feels like part of Aphex is to have that sort of stuff.

Listening again to the album I was struck by how much the more playful tracks remind me of early library and experimental electronic music - stuff like Raymond Scott or Dick Hyman.

Woah really?! Try Druqks next.

This was my first thought yesterday. Getting old sucks.

I’d say RDJ first (which is coming up soon anyway cuz I was the one to vote for it) just as great as Drukqs is its not exactly the most accessible and is worth building up a bit of a tolerance to him first

Hate it? It hurts me, but I don’t skip it.

Worship and Tribute - I’ll be honest, I first listened to this on a massive hangover and couldn’t get past the first track. Tried again at the gym and couldn’t get on with the vocals, although the music seemed pretty good. There was probably a window in my life where I would have given this more of a shot, but now is not that window…

In the Court of the Crimson King - listened to this a few times as a teen, mostly based on the cover art, and it seems my opinion hasn’t changed since then: odd moments of brilliance (that opening riff!) surrounded by a lot of unnecessary faffing about. Not a big prog fan, as you can probably tell…

Heart Food - never heard of the album or the artist before, and had a really lovely time with it. Amazing harmonies and arrangements, almost Brian Wilson-esque, and ā€œThe Kissā€ is an immediate all-timer…

And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out - I like my Yo La Tengo a bit rockier than this, and usually turn to ā€œI’m Not Afraid Of Youā€¦ā€ or ā€œI Can Hear the Heartā€¦ā€ when I’m in the mood to listen to them, but this is undeniably great too, and definitely conjures a more consistent mood than those other albums.

I Care Because You Do - probably my second favourite Aphex Twin album after SAW 85-92, and Alberto Basalm might be his best track. Couldn’t get on with Ventolin, like so many others before me, but the rest was a right treat for the ol’ ears

Raime EP - seems fine, if a bit one-note; might grow on me with repeat listens…

overall, a very entertaining second week! here’s to the next 457 of them

Raime

Totally new to me. Like the general atmosphere it creates, sort of thing I happily listen to as background music, but it didn’t really build or go anywhere interesting. If anyone could recommend an album I’d be interested to see how they have expanded their sound but just on the basis of this probably not enough for me to explore further.
