Hi guys. This is a thread to discuss The Matrix (1999) along with the other films in the series.
This thread has come about as a result of there being 20th Anniversary re-release screenings of The Matrix (1999) in cinemas currently.
In my opinion it’s a fucking stunning piece of work that more than holds up and, if anything has got better with age (and context). I rewatched the sequels and The Animatrix as well recently and, after being disappointed with them at the time, they’re actually properly fascinating pieces of work that the world just wasn’t ready for at the time.
Can we talk about them please.

Also rewatched recently (at home, for various reasons). It’s all very good but everything from “Guns. Lots of guns.” is just absolutely exhilarating.
Hugo Weaving is very good, isn’t he.

I actually really liked the matrix films and intend to rewatch them soon

Do you know something, Tone, I’ve never seen it.
Didn’t like the colour palette when I saw it in my teens, haven’t rewatched it
The Matrix is surely the kind of film about the matrix that the matrix would have been able to produce

So fucking good.
Such a tough role as well. To be that understated and dry but still be compelling is a real skill.

Probably the neatest summation of the sequels as you’re likely to see.

The bit when the sprinklers start, and his face just subtly changes, he manages to be both terrifying and incredibly funny.

Their costumes are fucking great though and it’s a shame the trenchcoat & sunnies thing was adopted by regional neckbeards everywhere

It’s SO good. I think I love it and that is an enormous turnaround from my reaction as a young scamp.
Such a bold fucking move to have the culmination essentially be “that film you loved is boring and played out, why are you people so obsessed with it”

watched the first one: thought it was dreadful.
quite liked the animatrix.
Not seen any of the others.
Just realised Hugo Weaving’s one of those great name - verb names

First film was alright, but every time I think about it, or see it again, I like it a little less.
Animatrix was alright, too.
The second film was terrible and the third marginally better.
Dark City > Matrix
Only seen the first, not sure why anyone thought there was more than one film to be had from that concept. I would rate it 3/5
