Very surprised that tortoise dont have their own dedicated thread, not even a hgatr?.
TNT would be in contention for my all time top 20 albums.
I Set My Face to the Hillside and The Suspension Bridge at IguazĂș Falls are about as good as music gets imo.
They tend to be slow movers
I was introduced to Tortoise 11 years after Millions Now Living Will Never Die was released and I listened to that, the self-titled, and TNT on the same day in June 4, 2007. I listened to Standards and Itâs All Around You the following week. Then I saw them tour Beacons of Ancestorship June 8, 2010 and that was a very nice show.
Hmm come to think of it I donât plow through discographies of newly discovered artists nearly as fast these days. But this was pre-streaming and although I was still buying a lot of CDs and downloading a lot, it still didnât feel overwhelming and I probably didnât overthink what to listen to quite so much.
Anyway theyâre pretty good. Job I had where a colleague introduced me to them was very chill and near a nice park & lake so it made for good work and park walking music. It was also within the year I moved to where I am now and I do miss that part of town.
Finally
Yep TNT is a top 10 life changing album for me I reckon. I like the early couple of albums and tbh Iâm a big fan of anything they put out, but TNT, Standards and Itâs All Around You are my happy place.
Self titled is really good, but IMO the run from Millions Now Living all the way to Itâs All Around You is untouchable!
Beacons and Catastrophist are kinda unmemorable for me, but the latest one was definitely a stronger return to form.
Anyone know if Jeff is playing with them on the 2026 shows? He wasnât at the Barbican in November.
Gary Ashby?
Yeah, I would imagine he should be. It was a personal thing so he had to cancel at very short notice. He had some solo shows booked the same weekend that had to be cancelled too
Think I saw that heâs pulled out of all gigs for remainder of the year and James Elkington is filling in.
In better news his EXCELLENT quartet has a new album due soon.
