Are you going on your own? I think we’ll be inside getting pies for dinner before the gig, if you see a very short woman with a fairly tall man then feel free to come join us
Yeah I’m solo. Will be driving up so not sure when I’ll get there but I’ll keep an eye out for you
Gig was weird. His little admission he wasn’t very happy was…unexpected. The lady who went full main character mode when they jokingly started playing THE HIT was annoying, and when they did play it, she was sticking her phone in his face.
Also noticed this. Struck me as…different from his usual self-deprecation.
Strange atmosphere all round. There was a guy absolutely out of his mind staggering about near the back which was a bit of a distraction. Struggling to get a hold on the thought process behind, “American Football tonight, best do loads of dissociative drugs beforehand”
There was someone standing near me who just kept going on about when they were going to play Never Meant, saying “I’M GONNA CRY IF IT’S NOT NEXT” as if they wouldn’t play their biggest song and they’d just stick it in the middle of the set
I enjoyed it but it was a weird gig wasn’t it
I saw Owen on Tuesday night and he was pretty unwell and a bit more … idk, detached than usual. Still jokey, self-deprecation but didn’t feel the same. Seemed genuinely a little annoyed to have someone yell a question about Matt Healy.
had no idea one of their tracks was particularly massive
would’ve assumed the one with Hayley Williams would be the best known
and that the first album would be broadly known as an album
funny how that can happen!
Went over nearly everyone’s heads last night.
Seems the Tik Tok effect is hitting unlikely targets. Great for them in terms of streaming and stuff, but seemingly can bring in fans who aren’t really there to enjoy the set. Might ping him on Twitter and see if he’s ok.
I couldn’t hear the female vocalist at all during that song and I was next to the sound desk, dunno what happened there. Also weird that they didn’t introduce her or anything.
I think Never Meant has become an almost archetypal/definitive ‘midwest emo’ song through youtube (tiktok?) memes and things like that. I’m sure I’ve seen it referenced a few times and it think has that first album has got bigger and bigger it’s become the most well known song.
In fact looking at their top songs on spotify… Yeah that’s some algorithm/tiktok thing going on there.
That’s nuts. The sound was noticeably poorer than previous times I’ve seen them there.
yeah, it was always the one anyone played before the internet ruined everything also.
not sure how I didn’t notice when I was looking earlier but I’m a big fan of how those song titles form a coherent sentence
really?? it’s the first/best song on the only album they had for like 20 years, i don’t think it’s the algo
There isn’t a true softboy out there that hasn’t put it on a mixtape to impress some ladies.

what I mean is it’ll be the one that autoplays after similar bands or ends up on playlists, it is significantly more plays than all the others. Unless most fans only listen to that song and not the rest of the album?
i’d be willing to bet that 90% of people who have heard american football heard never meant first, which means that there’s a good chance that people will only listen to never meant if they think of american football/are making a sadboy playlist/are making a midwest emo playlist/are introducing their friend to american football
- never meant is the first american football song i heard
- something else
The One with the Wurlitzer
