Bands and Artists YOU feel you only need one record by

A version of this thread probably already exists but I couldn’t find it, honest.

This occurs to me every once in a while. There are acts who made a record I absolutely fucking love and for some reason it seems to be the only record I need by them.

I can’t quite work out why they haven’t made me actively want to hear more of their catalogue.

Perhaps it’s just a strangely personal quirk.

Two acts that spring to mind for me are Sufjan and The Hold Steady.

I think Illinois and Boys and Girls in America are genuine masterpieces but although I’ve checked out their other records at times, I’ve never felt an urgent need to. For whatever reason I’m perfectly satisfied with those two albums.

Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump

I do like some of their other albums / songs but The Sophtware Slump is a 10/10 album, maybe in my all-time top five albums, and nothing has really come close to matching it.

Yeah I think this is common for me. Sometimes it’s temporary, eg it’s taken until last year’s release but I finally have another La Dispute album I rate as highly as Rooms of the House.

Not sure anyone needs more than Painted Shut by Hop Along.

And while Fleetwood Mac have some great songs I don’t think I’ve ever taken to any album apart from Rumours.

Have listened to several Dinosaur Jr albums but I have a second hand CD of Beyond and it’s the only one I feel the need to go back to with any regularity.

Strokes - Is This It

Yes it is, for me

Bark Your Head Off, Dog is a great record - Prior Things is such a good album closer

Maccabees - Wall of Arms

Other examples: Splid by Kvelertak. I like the earlier albums and didn’t get on with the later one but it’s by far the one for me. So that one gets played a lot.

Mastodon’s Leviathan has just continued to be the only one of theirs I listen to really.

Yeah but I just always come back to Painted Shut.

You’re Living All Over Me and Bug are all I really need now to be honest. But they’re a band that did keep me checking out each new release for years.

I think there’s some bands that I feel I completely get and suspect that they won’t top it. Maybe it’s not even something I think consciously.

Something I feel in my core and that’s why I don’t feel the drive to hunt for more.

It could also be that paradoxically a record that feels perfect is less likely to make me want more than a very good record that suggests better to come.

can definitely see the vision in many Halsey albums and think they’re probably great in their own right, but I really just want to shake my ass to If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power at any and all times. kind of thought she was a bit rubbish before that came out, and I take it back I eat my words, I re-evaluated them, but still just think If I Can’t Have Love is way better than anything else she’s done. way better than anything else most people have done tbqh

I alluded to it in another thread

The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream

It’s a brilliant album, but it gives me precisely enough of what it does that I really don’t want more.

I get this entirely!

He should have stuck to H G Wells

There’s a lot on the later albums that I really like but the first really perfected their whole idea.

Microwave - Death Is A Warm Blanket.

29 minutes of bonkers post-hardcore, metalcore, pop punk, grunge spread over 10 tracks, where every song sounds different or is a different genre in some way. Exemplary.

Tried their other albums and they do absolutely nothing for me.
