BOKO YOUT

I’ve mentioned BOKO YOUT in a few threads before, most recently in the Viagra Boys thread as they’re the support act on Viagra Boys European tour - coming to an 02 academy near you this month and next

Decided that BOKO YOUT deserve their own thread - so, here it is

Boko Yout is the brainchild and band of Paul Adamah (pictured)

He started self-producing and releasing stuff back in 2022 with the singles ‘News’ and ‘Anxiety’ - singing, playing bass and having various other musicians come in and play some guitar etc. This early stuff was like Tyler, The Creator crossed with mid/late 90s Beck

these two singles were then extended into the As Seen on TV EP in 2023

There’s a concept running through this EP about stereotypes of black & gay men on TV

So during 2023 Paul put a band together and started touring these songs and others and man - he’s such a natural performer and weaves all kinds of storytelling into the performances - from puppetry to African folk tales and all sorts of stagecraft, it’s brilliant

Here’s some great live footage and BTS from when they supported Viagra Boys in Stockholm 2023

Paul has also been active doing guest vocals on other artist’s tracks as well. Here with Stuzzi

Last year Boko Yout started the journey to their debut LP with The Big Hike Tour

and the release of what was probably my favourite track of last year - ignored

Here’s the band doing it live on The Swedish P3 Radio awards a couple of months back - this is badass

So today they release the next track from the forthcoming album - Imagine

Like Ignored it’s another tough slice of what Paul calls Afro-Grunge - lots of early Bloc Party influence in there alongside all the other references

So yeah - that’s Boko Yout so far. The debut album is in the bag and I think will be out in August.

Paul and his band are without doubt the most interesting act in Sweden right now - phenomal live and a unique talent that includes such a well-rounded conceptual vision - and if you’re going to see Viagra Boys on this UK/european tour you need to absolutely get there early for Boko Yout

Paul’s quite active on social media too so follow @bokoyout on instagram if that’s your thing

so yeah, high time Boko Yout had their own thread and here it is

are you into it? Get into it

It’s live now

REALLY looking forward to this album

A really good article/interview in English at last

https://readdork.com/features/boko-yout-interview-july25/

Missed them for the incredibly rock’n’roll reason that we were on the train through when I finally read the ticket and realised it was an early show.

Got to the venue just in time to see him sweaty and shirtless running up to the merch stand.

Damn shame

But I’m sure they’ll be back

Based on my respect for your opinion and the description you gave, I’ve been giving the music a listen today and now I am also excited for the album

Excellent

Article/interview in TLOBF too now

It’s slowly building

Album’s out! :headphones:

Interesting little fact I found while reading an article about Paul:

“Outside of music, he keeps things nerdy. “Recently, I’ve been very into Magic the Gathering,” he adds. Of course, he has.” :joy:

Kind of feel like I need to start hanging out at Magic shops in Stockholm to try getting a game with him.

You beat me to it!

Magic, The Gathering… can’t say it’s in my interest area but yeah, he’s recently become obsessed by all accounts

Haven’t had a chance to listen to the album yet either but hopefully I’ll get along to a little listening party thingy this evening

Hugely looking forward to this record though, been wating an age

Incredible poster!

I haven’t posted it in the new music thread because I thought that should be left to you at least

Best to keep it that way tbh, haha. I didn’t grow up playing but somehow drifted into it as an adult. Addictive stuff.

Got through my first listen now. It’s good.

The last track “GIMMIE LOVE” is really nice, and an unexpected change of pace. I was only familiar with the big energetic singles so I didn’t know he had this kind of range. Sounds almost like the XX or something. Perfect closer to leave you wanting more.

Album of the year this

Truly exceptional stuff on loads of levels, absolutely kicks arse. A proper contemporary modern art-rock record, like Fontaines DC or the recent Turnstile record or something but from afro-Swedish roots and peppered with some great electronic sounds & immaculate production

I know I’m biased but it really is tremendous

Really enjoying it a few tracks in, though for references I’d reach for Young Fathers, Bakar, King Krule at his most upbeat. Rap sensibilities filtered though garagey indie

Feels like I’ll come back to this quite a bit
