agree with people who have said feels more in line with funkadelic and a bit of later era flying lotus kind of vibes to me.

Rap fans, including myself, don’t want to hear it, but the reality is that in large slices of music and pop culture, “rapper” is thrown around with salt on the tongue. Pop culture is powerfully influenced by hip-hop, that is until the rappers get too close and the hands reach for the pearls.

Those seem like comments from twenty years ago. Really weird reading them now.

Pitchfork are generally pretty inoffensive these days. But if something gets a bit of buzz without them being involved? Ooooh, they don’t like that.

Funny how the review plays out a discussion we’ve had in this thread.

It seems such an obvious misinterpretation to me. How could anyone argue that ‘rappers’ per se are not taken seriously when Kendrick Lamar has won a frigging Pulitzer Prize (more than any rock or pop artists has ever done)? Yachty’s comment was plainly referring to the type of rapper he is perceived to be and he’s surely entitled to try to shift that perception.

Also read as being written by someone who only likes hip hop and gets upset with rappers make music that isn’t straight-up hip-hop. Is there such a thing as Dad-hop?

Yes. It’s very similar to some dinosaur rock critic complaining about a guitar band using synths or samplers or programmed beats. Exactly the same ‘stay in your lane’ energy.

There definitely is. As someone else mentioned above, hip hop fans who only listen to stuff from 30 years ago are as insufferable as rock fans who only listen to stuff from 30-50 years ago.

Yeah, other than 2, possibly 3 songs it just sounds like a rap album, and those are rap-led as well

there deffo is but idk if that’s fair on the critic, he said he loved poland which is not something those type of annoying old heads would fuck with at all

think i’m reading it different to you guys, don’t think he’s saying yachty should stay in his lane, more that it’s a shame that he felt he had to make a non-rap album in the first place and that the lane he’s switched to isn’t all that good? (both points are debatable, granted)

i like the album a fair bit more than the reviewer, for the record

the reviewer is with me thinking that Yachty’s voice is what gives the album any real intrigue

and they are defs not being a hip-hop dad, it’s just that the stuff the producers served up is actually very safe and etc

Long tradition of black artists, going back to the blues days, being known by a nickname relating to their physical stature. Little/Big/Fat(s)/Slim etc etc

I’ve read a couple of Pierre columns and he doesn’t come across as a stubborn old head to me, though there’s a lot of Here’s What This Means For The State of Hip-Hop™ going on too.

I wonder if P4K didn’t expect the response and made this review a last minute assignment, not that that would change Pierre’s perspective
