Childish Gambino

This is going to get laughed out of court. Kidd Wes’ track is a barely-there trap track made in Garage Band or fucking EasyBeats or something with a stop-start flow that’s similar to Gambino but Gambino’s been rapping for over a decade and isn’t new to the style. Gambino’s track is a multi-faceted production that was clearly created with the visuals in mind. Even taking into account the similarity between the “Made In America” and “This Is America” refrains, there’s not enough there to hang a lawsuit on.

Donald Glover posted on Instagram yesterday, and has just now posted on Twitter. Previous behaviour indicates this could preceeded potential new Childish Gambino music, and I’m a little bit excited at the prospect.

Also realise it could be S3 of Atlanta coming though.

Thought he had retired from music? at least the Childish Gambino moniker.

Hopefully not and it wouldn’t be the first time similar claims were made by others… would bloody love some new music from him tbh.

Weird follow up tweet though. What does “getting cancelled” even mean here?

Yeh I thought that the Childish Gambino moniker was going to retire, but like you say - similar claims have been made by others and i’m so so hopeful for new music from him.

Yeh I did think this too, I can’t quite figure out the use of ‘cancelled’ in this context/sentence given my understanding of it. I’m keeping an eye on his Instagram/Twitter but don’t expect anything else to drop now, given he is quite elusive on there anyway.

This isn’t about Lakeith Stanfield is it?

Or about Atlanta being cancelled by TV execs?

Ohhhhh if he means people being worried about their tv show getting cancelled then that tweet makes significantly more sense.

I’m just so used to “people are afraid of getting cancelled” being used by absolute berks to excuse absolute nonsense. :joy:

Tbf even if he’s talking about being cancelled in the online discourse sense he’s deffo entitled to his opinion. I listened to Michaela Coel on the Louis Theroux podcast talking about how she found that sometimes when writing from a black perspective you can get dragged online or accused of nasty stuff when you introduce moral ambiguity in your characters, obvs worked out pretty well for her in the end but I think she mentioned some friends of hers who had a rougher time. Perhaps this is a similar problem across the pond? The podcast’s worth a listen anyway

Was so excited for his last album. Listened to it twice and likely never will again. He has such a weird musical trajectory - terrible to good to terrible again, with some peaks and troughs interspersed throughout.

Yep, totally agree. (Also that Michaela Cole interview was excellent and everyone should listen to it.)

It seemed like a bit of a confusing non-sequitur in the context of the other tweets, but you’re right that there could well be aspects to it that I don’t get as a white person.

Sincerely hope Atlanta hasn’t been cancelled either way.

glover has signed an exclusive contract with amazon now and the only exception is to make atlanta for fx, which is cool but i doubt it’ll be his main focus any time soon…
