Strong January. Only one album that I previously had on the calendar and was looking forward to (Lambrini Girls); everything else a lovely surprise. Tough choosing between my top 3. Dax Riggs’ terrific voice with this swampy bluesy rock make for a very compelling (if quite short) album, Katie McTigue (Pacing) made an even shorter album (13 minutes) which scratches that anti-folk Kimya Dawson-esque itch for me, but the Nottingham sisters ALT BLK ERA have put together a collection of rock-infused ebullient pop songs that are just so darned catchy and so take the top spot.
1: Bad Bunny: DeBI TiRAR MaS FOTos
2: Vanessa Amara: Cafe Life
3: Blacksea Nao Maya: Despartar
4: Mike: Showbiz!
5: Voice Actor & Squu: Lust 1
Amazing month for Jan. Bad Bunny is superb, borderline genius pop record. Know little about Puerto Rican music, but such an interesting way of interpolating it into the vocabulary of such a large audience, exactly what mega pop stars should be doing, IMO. Vanessa Amara is a new one on me, actually a Danish duo, it’s a sort of electro pop record, weird and appealing at the same time - can’t stop playing it. Blacksea is another home run for Principe, enjoying the grungy influence in parts of it - they just go from strength to strength. Finally seeing the appeal of Mike, low key but proper depth & feeling & the production is mega. Slow burn but a great record. And Voice Actor is everything I hoped, twisted, weird, uncomfortable, hypnotic. Need to spend some time with it on headphones.
Sad to leave out Dean Blunt & Elias Ronnenfelt. It’s mega. But need bit more time, only just come onto streaming. It’s a great combo!
