DiS Users' January 2026 Album Of The Month

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!

Welcome to the longest running monthly episodic thread in the world, ever! This thread has been going since 2013. I need new hobbies. :slightly_smiling_face:

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

A very good month for live music than new releases for me. Damon and Naomi with Stewart Lee was great fun. A sublime evening at Cafe Oto with some brilliant guest spots including Laetitia Sadier, Gina Birch and Mark Webber. The first time I saw both Stereolab and Pulp was at Brixton in December 95 when the former supported the latter. I had a nice chat with Naomi whilst buying a Galaxie t-shirt from her. A brilliant evening.

I saw Dry Cleaning at Rough Trade East with my girlfriend and we had a great time there. I’ve seen Dry Cleaning four time live now and they remain a brilliant live act and a hell of a tight band. I had a very quick chat with Florence Shaw at the signing about Sprechgesang. That’s a term I didn’t was a thing nor existed before hearing a piece on the radio about it a week before their Rough Trade show where Shaw herself was a guest.

First time seeing Comet Gain this side of covid who are always fun. We also saw Fightmilk supported by Darren Hayman’s band; great time.

My choices:

1. Dry Cleaning - Secret Love

2. Courtney Marie Andrews - Valentine

3. Tessa Rose Jackson - The Lighthouse

4. Peaer - Doppelgänger

5. Jenny on Holiday - Quicksand Heart

The new Dry Cleaning is great. A slightly different pace and style of album and it works for me. I’ve generally listened to Dry Cleaning on shuffle than specific albums/EPs and have enjoyed both the new album on its own and new songs intermingled with their older tracks. I wouldn’t describe Dry Cleaning songs from their previous albums that I love necessarily as beautiful but would use that to describe new songs like Joy and Let Me Grow And See The Fruit as such. Love the album.

The new Courtney Marie Andrews album is brilliant. I saw her live for a few songs several years ago and really loved this one.

Tessa Rose Jackson’s album is a lovely soothing album.

I kind of liked Peaer and thought Jenny on Holiday was ok but not that good. That’s all that I heard this month.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked. Not sure what’s out tomorrow. I’ll see what you guys are listening to.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 8th February and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Today is the biggest release day of the month (for me), so I’ll be pushing my votes back to just before the deadline

I’ll go because I can’t see anything changing this. Surprisingly great month!

1: Stickerbush & heavensouls: Darklight
2: xavisphone: balança e paixão
3: Username & Marsh Crane: Overtime
4: xaviersobased: Xavier
5: Gaute Granli: Rosacea

Very good HM’s: Shackleton, Roc Marciano, DJ Ramon Sucesso

Certainly the first 4, despite being really different records share quite a lot of DNA in that they are young, adventerous records that push against the confines of their genres quite vigorously.

Summary

Don’t know how to classify Stickerbush / heavensouls record. Guess it’s hip-hop in a fashion, but there’s limited rapping and the instrumentals are wild. Such an engrossing front to back listen, parallels with JPEG I guess, but seems much less forced and much more natural. Going to be trying to work it out for a long time. xavispohne is baile funk, but doesn’t limit itself to that - the back half takes that template and makes it really quite… dub. Apt home on Modern Love then, and he’s talked about being an Andy Stott fan a bit. It’s so alive, the whole thing. Username & Marsh Crane is a footwork record, for sure, but it’s so liberal with it’s samples and influences and weirdly melancholy for music this fast and jerky - I’m finding it to be really beautiful. And the Justice sample is super moreish. xaviersobased is a really step up, kinda ragey-ish rap, but his production is insane and it creates a real vibe - sort of half Osamason / half Bladee, and got more depth than a lot of his contemporaries. Feels like a kinda low key classic about 5 listens in. And Gaute Granli is a weird sort of white soul template that goes in some really weird directions. Simultaneously sounds like Low on one track, then How to Dress Well on another. Properly off the wall, but done in an interesting way so you want to go with it. Really rewarding.

I’m sure I’ll listen to more January releases throughout the year. So far I’ve heard just 3, and I’m not inspired to put call them favorites yet.

  2. Xiu Xiu - Xiu Muthafuckin’ Xiu

Also enjoyed but need to spend more time with:

Roc Marciano - 656
Yin Yin - Yatta!
Marta Del Grandi - Dream Life
Shintaro Sakamoto - Yoo-hoo
By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
Ty Segall - “Live” “At” “The” “BBC”

Really decent releases this month tbh. Think Tragic Magic might be an early AOTY contender straight out of the gate…
