Emma-Jean Thackray

With her new album coming out last week, I thought i’d start a thread on her. She’s fucking great, huh? Her last album is probably one of my favourite albums on the past 10 years or so and this new one looks like it’s gonna be another all timer.

Great article on her…

She’s just fucking great.

Absolutely loved Yellow. The new one hasn’t clicked for me yet, it all feels a bit samey or something but hopefully I just need to spend more time with it. I bet the live shows are fucking great, definitely high up on my wish list.

This didn’t click with me on first listen…but I’m on my third now and I’m really digging it. Great record, and a definite different style to Yellow, but generally better all round. Her vocals particularly are great

Her name is listed 123 times in the album’s credits.

From Leeds? Wonder if she’s related to Jake Thackray.

When we ask whether she bears any relation to Jake Thackray, another off-beat musician who was born around Leeds and later moved to Wales, she’s wry about it.

“I don’t,” she says, smirking. “But maybe we should keep the mystery alive and not tell people that? I like being asked that, because he’s a bit of a weirdo. How can we lay it out so I don’t definitely say, ‘No, I’m not’?”

Is she any relation to Beth Jeans Houghton?

Just had my first listen of Weirdo - very much a fan. The way that each track focuses around its title and has its own little flavours makes me think of Whack World, but without cutting the bangers off early.

Big fan here. Loved the new album, Yellow was great, a few good EPs too.

Just seeing now that she had a couple of releases before these, Walrus and Ley Lines, has anyone heard these and would recommend checking them out?

Also @paulo I noticed when searching for her in the forum that your 107 best albums thread is on hiatus, are you coming back to that?

Oh yeah, forgot about that haha. Coming up to two years since I started it and only at 85! May update it again now actually…

Yeah it’s decent

Love both of these too, almost as much as Yellow. Apparently she took influence from what Madlib did as Yesterday’s New Quintet when making Ley Lines and you can definitely see his influences in her early work.

Only recently discovered her off the back of the Guardian interview, and I’m absolutely loving her blend of jazz-funk with a dusting of '70s soul mixed in for good measure on Weirdo. Definitely catching her at Chalk in November.

Haven’t watched Later… in ages. Since when did the audience start sitting in the rafters?
