Gaming 2025

Started playing I am Your Beast, and whilst I enjoyed the gunplay and the concept, it hard locks levels later on in the game against getting higher ranks in levels, and I am not interested in that at all.

I added on a load of the assists and it explicitly says you can’t get top ranks with them on, which is ablist bullshit.

Man, there is a current of games inherently putting barriers into their games in the indie space, be it instadeath, run based repitition and RNG, or hard rule locked progression. It is 2025. This is not a fucking arcade. Why won’t games stop fucking doing bullshit like that?

So Europa Universalis V turned out pretty good.

Yeah, I’ve thought for a while it’s frustrating how a lot of games these days either make things a little too easy for the sake of narrative (story based adventure games without proper puzzles etc) or there’s just this thing of fetishising difficulty so Reddit moderators can have something in their life to be proud of

some people just like hard games. It’s cool that there’s room for hard/medium/easy experiences

Anyone know much about monitors?

I am thinking of getting a small one, to ideally use as a second screen for my MacBook.

But most importantly, to play PS2, Wii U (and more likely Wii through the console) and potentially Master System games on.

Am I living in Dreamland hoping to find something vaguely affordable that could service all of those?

If you’re playing retro gear, and not emulating it, you’ll need something like an OSSC or Retrotink. Or Kaiko Labs HDMI converters for each one which are the bare minimum I’d recommend for quality upscaling/conversuon.

Wii U is fine though as that has HDMI out.

Or you could get a second hand LCD from 2006-2014 era that tended to have HDMI and Scart. The only issue is those TVs are kind shit re: motion handling, ghosting, image quality, deinterlacing.

I am not too worried about the Master System tbh. There’s only about 2 games on there I’m interested in playing so it’s a nice to have.

So it would just be the PS2 I’d need to figure out. I presume that Wii games played through the Wii U would be ok… And that the sensor bar still works on a monitor?

I’m honestly not much of a snob when it comes to TV picture quality, frame rate etc. And I can only see myself diving in from time to time to play the old greats. So I’m not worried about it being incredible quality, more serviceable and working.

Thanks by the way!

Sensor bar will work with whatever, you just might find calibration of the pointer is slightly weird if you’ve got a particularly small or big monitor because I don’t recall it having an OS level calibration.

The sensor bar is literally just 2 IR lights the wiimote looks for. It will work by any monitor.

You can use a pair of candles instead.

Tbh I’d just check out the Kaico Labs website. They make stuff that’s very plug and play, and it’s not bad. There’s a cheap ps2 passthrough hdmi thing that lets your tv handle all the upscaling (likely won’t work with ps1 games as they’re 240p and hdmi tvs struggle with that) and they do a slightly more expensive one that upscales i think.

Wii on Wii U is fine. Not stunning but solid.

Thank you. Presume my old PS1 games will play ok, just look a bit shit?

I wonder if Time Criss would work…

Lightgun games only work with CRTs as far as I’m aware. I know there’s a couple of projects that tried to look into making them work with modern screens, but not aware of any that worked.

Good news

It’s a stand alone console though (good timing as well!)

Nah, in that case the gun looks for the the CRT scanline to know where it’s aimed.
