Can’t remember who put me into his solo record, Heavy Metal, last year, but I absolutely love it. Think it got overlooked in the year end stuff as it was released in December.
Some flashes of Astral Weeks/early Leonard Cohen here and there, as well as like, contemporary/zoomer pop influences. Definitely its own thing. Musically quite ornate at times, lyrically quite a weird mix of surreal/funny/sad/ecstatic.
Ended up listening to Geese again off the back of it – listened to Projector when it came out but didn’t really like it. 3D Country, their newer one, is great!
Edit: just occurred to me that I’m totally desensitised to the title/lyrics of the first one, but it might be upsetting for some – swapped it for a different track
More of a fan of his solo stuff than Geese, tbh. Got into Heavy Metal this year and tried 3D country…it was nice enough but none of it really stuck, despite having heard it 3-4 times by now. Love his idiosyncratic singing style.
Projector is great! liked how it was clearly post-punk influenced but a lot brighter and more major-key than that genre usually is, felt like a good spring/summer album to me. Got it cheap in some sale so played it loads just since I had it to hand - recommend people give it another go
3D Country didn’t land for me as an album, but was/am obsessed with these two tracks, think they’re just incredibly hooky. Cowboy Nudes especially won’t leave my head for days after I’ve heard it. BE MY WAAAARRIORRRRR
annoyed i never caught them, scheduled to play a festival here but they were off the lineup when I arrived on the day, then was away when they played Glasgow. One day!
Heavy Metal definitely landing better now, feels like it needed some sun to unlock it. Nausicaa into Loves Takes Miles is a lovely pairing - he reminds me a little of Hamilton Leithauser in some moments
If anyone here has spare ticket(s) for any of Cameron Winter’s London shows please drop me a message. Been listening to the record on repeat the last few weeks and would love to see him perform it live.
